It would be a total waste to let the Gallery at Ebrington go as so much money was spent to bring this space up to an international standard and it should be a legacy that stems from the city of culture year.

The £2.5million already spent was well spent. It will be waste not to use this space as a foundation and resource for future development. It would be a great, great shame if this opportunity is missed to build on what has been achieved over the last year.

As the second largest city in NI, we need to have a dedicated showcase venue to both celebrate the rich pool of local talent that we have, and invite international artists to exhibit here. We have a few commercial galleries and two conceptual galleries, which although they all do a sterling job, don't represent the vast array of other types of arts and crafts. Converting the Ebrington space into office blocks shows a distinct lack of imagination - the same myopia that granted a large riverside plot to a supermarket - and smacks of box ticking, if we assume that there are no jobs to fill it. Council can do better.

Fantastic opportunity to make Waterside a cultural magnet and to link the two halves of Derry further through culture. Working for Turner I am amazed at how popular the venue is with people across the city. A purpose-built gallery accommodating national/international and local/ community visual and other arts activities at this site seems perfectly situated, to provide legacy to European City of Culture status.

What a beautiful space the Gallery is! And what a waste of already-spent money if it is to be converted in to "offices". Will these offices draw people in their thousands to the site and generate cultural conversations and the joy of feeling and being part of a wider consciousness? No, they won't. Do we want this city to revert to being a city of lost opportunities, of departed sons and daughters, of stymied hopes and aspirations for the many while the feathered-nest factotums sit in their offices and talk of culture as if it were able to be measured, parceled up and "put in its place"? I think not. This year has shown what this city can be - let's not waste that progress; let's not lose that momentum.

I heard recently that over a million people crossed the peace bridge each year. Lets keep them crossing that bridge to visit The Ebrington Gallery it is a wonderful opportunity to enhance the North west of Ireland. We need a visual space like this for touring exhibitions. The north-west is rich in the arts, and the Ebrington Gallery can only help to keep this alive.
