Permanent toilet attendants keep our public toilets safe, clean and accessible for everyone in the community, as well as for tourists. East Lothian Council want to remove permanent attendants from the public toilets in Haddington, Musselburgh and North Berwick and replace them with a mobile attendant that will travel between all three facilities.

Without a permanent attendant to keep watch it is likely that standards will fall and the toilets could become a target for vandalism or drug use. They could even end up closing altogether.

This also feeds into a wider issue, where public toilets are falling into disrepute and disrepair, like those below:

Let’s save the people that take pride in keeping these toilets safe, clean and accessible. Please sign and share the petition.

Reaching this level of support confirms that many of us view our public facilities as essential parts of the local landscape. It is encouraging to see this shared commitment to protecting the staff who keep our community spaces functional and welcoming for everyone.

we probably have the best award winning toilet facilities in Scotland because they are staffed. We must keep them that way. They are something we can be proud of. Visitors are always so impressed when they make a visit. I will do all I can to help save them from becoming less than wonderful. A Huge thank you to all the staff who do a brilliant job.

North Berwick toilets often strewn with paper and blocked when full time attendant is off duty for 4 days and the mobile unit is in charge. (pics available in Courier)What falls on the floor between mobile attendants stays on the floor till next visit. Full time attendant sweeps and cleans even in his lunch break!!

The public toilets are an essential public amenity and compared to many in the country, where there are any at all, they are notable for being clean, pleasant and usable. This is due in no small part to the presence and hard work of the permanent attendants. They are a reassuring and civilising presence and their loss would be a grave mistake for the county. A small charge would be a worthwhile price to maintain the current level of service and amenity.

during a very recent visit, friends from England commented that every public toilet they had used were the cleanest they had ever seen. It has prompted them to return next year for much more than a short break. Clean toilets do contribute to the tourist trade!

East Lothian has the best maintained public loos I've used. Obviously a source of pride, full of plants and no evidence of vandalism. I know budgets are under extreme pressure but closure could unduly affect the elderly and disabled as well as the local economy as visitors are less likely to stop if there are no facilities.

A regular visitor to East Lothian, would be caught short by the closure and without full time attendants these clean amenities would soon succumb to dirty vandalised eye sores and a hub for anti- social behaviour

Please keep the permanent toilet attendants in post and save these facilities from potential closure in the future due to antisocial behaviour which occurs when facilities are left unmanned.

Without full time attendants the toilets just get abused and vandalized.
