One more odd and moot renovation that would not add any scienific value to the institution in question but will surely prove disturbing and counterproductive for everyone involved, - local and visiting scholars as well. Leiden always impressed me as a center of Oriental studies and I wish it to remain one.

De (relatieve) onafhankelijkheid van het per definitie efemere beleid van faculteitsbesturen en onderzoeksscholen, die aantoonbaar weinig waardering hebben voor de "kleine" vakken op het gebied van het Oude Nabije Oosten, is cruciaal voor een wetenschappelijke collectievorming op lange termijn en de overdracht van vaak unieke kennis. Juist bij de uitstekende internationale reputatie van het NINO op dit gebied is de Universiteit zelf zeer gebaat, ook volgens haar eigen standaarden. "Wetenschappelijke infrastructuur" verhoogt immers niet alleen de aantrekkingskracht op studenten, promovendi en medewerkers, het is ook een formeel beoordelingscriterium.

Without the excellent collection of the NINO much of my research in Old Nubian would have been impossible. Its open stack system does not deserve to be demolished for yet another "reorganization." Hand off from NINO!

The NINO is an internationally very renowned scientific institution. As an Erasmus-student I had the pleasure to study there and to make use of the excellent library as well as the Böhl Collection. To maintain its current quality of research it is more than vital that the NINO has its own staff and can controll its assets without any intermediary. I join the petition and appeal to all those in charge of decision not to change the well established structures and administration of the NINO.

As a student of Egyptology at the KU Leuven, I understand all too well the negative repercussions which such short-sighted decisions convey. Every Egyptology student and scholars deserves a dedicated and specialised library to achieve and maintain the highest level of academic excellence in education and research.

Door zijn open opstelling van de bibliotheek en de uiterst korte lijnen naar zeer deskundig bibliotheekpersoneel is het NINO voor het beoefenen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek een van de meest efficiënt functionerende instellingen ter wereld op het gebied van het Oude Nabije Oosten. Dit willens en wetens dwarsbomen getuigt van een anti-wetenschappelijke mentaliteit, die des te schrijnender is aangezien zij aan de dag gelegd wordt door personen die zelf gedurende hun carrière alle voordelen hiervan hebben gesmaakt, maar dit de volgende generaties ontzeggen. Schande!

I studied a class in "Ancient Egyptian Law" with Koen Donker van Heel whilst on exchange at Leiden Law School in 2012. It was an absolute highlight of my time in Leiden and this department should be supported to the full extent.
