As a political science student at PSU, there seems to be a clear lack of communication between what the students want and the budget that is dispersed within the College of Urban and Public Affairs. As it stands, Dr. Gies is our only Political Theorist, and provides distinct and unique classes that are based in class discussions that aim to include everyone's thoughts. While taking his classes, I have gained a respect for the history of politics and how it has emerged, and I have been able to make connections between the information he teaches us and other political science classes I have taken/am taking, which is incredibly useful in solidifying information in my memory.
Dr. Gies is the only professor at PSU who teaches classes such as Politics of Emerging Media, Liberalism and it's Critics, and Queer Theory - all of which are modern and relatively important subjects to include in political science studies. As a PHD graduate of John Hopkins University with a distance focus on Political Theory, there is no other professor more qualified than Dr. Gies for this job at Portland State. Further, there would be no replacement for this professor, and political theory classes would merge with other Political Science classes creating strain on not only the other professors who are not as qualified or willing to teach this material and combine it into their syllabus, but there is a distinct lack of respect for the students who came to the College of Urban and Public Affairs at PSU to study Political Theory further within their Political Science degree's.
Please show your support for PSU creating room in their budget for this adjunct professor who is more than deserving of pre-tenure, followed by tenure.

The momentum behind this fight is proof that the administration cannot simply ignore us anymore. Watching the department scramble shows exactly how nervous they are about our collective refusal to lose Dr. Gies.

PS needs a political theorist. As a discipline it literally can't function without one. Nathan Gies is a superb teacher and colleague. We need to retain him.
During a really difficult period a few terms ago I was in two of Dr. Guesses classes. In each of them he supported me immensely. Portland State University would be losing one of the best professors they have.
Dr. Gies brings a unique and useful perspective to political science at PSU. There's literally no other political primary philosophy/theory professor, and in the one class I've had with him he was excellent.
Dr. Gile is an indispensable instructor for our interdisciplinary programs, MPP and PAP. We cannot have a political science department that does not have any political theorist among the faculty.
I'm devastated by the lack of care that PSU is showing to the PoliSci Dept as a whole. Cutting valuable staff and classes in a department that is needed now more than ever. I just don't understand the reasoning at all. I sincerely hope that administration reconsiders their attack on the PS department. I suspect the lose of quality instructors and instruction will only aid in the continued decline of enrollment for the school as a whole. As an undergrad looking at potential grad school, I was really hoping to continue at PSU... but now that seems in jeopardy. I'm truly disappointed in this decision and hope to see better from the administration moving forward.
The education I've received from Dr. Gies has been pivotal in career as a student.

Professor Gies is an amazing lecturer and teacher. I have taken two of his classes and hope to take many more. Our classroom discussions have been nothing short of amazing because students feel supported and listened to.
