Music programs are being pushed out at lots of schools and it seriously needs to stop. Just like some kids could never imagine not playing a sport, some kids can’t imagine not being in band or choir. Make it possible for everyone to do what they want!! Why not?!

I strongly urge you to continue to support the valuable arts programs in the Derry Area School District. Replacing all retiring music educators is the least that can be done to continue to offer your students a positive outlet in a world that gives them all too many negative outlets. Making any other choice would be devastating for decades to come for the Derry students.

Why can't the school board consist of people who support the arts insteading of axing programs and blaming the budget

My 4 children were all active in Chorus, band, ensembles, and musicals throughout their school years at Derry Area. I, too, am a music teacher who had the pleasure of subbing for nearly every music teacher in the school system from 1976-1993. How sad for the students of our area. This plan is unacceptable!

Derry music department is responsible for much of my success in life! I graduated as Lauren McCurdy in 2006 and still recognize and appreciate all of what I learned at Derry. Cutting back AGAIN on the music department is irresponsible. Derry should allow its music department to flourish so that it can continue to change lives for the better! I’d like to credit my most inspiring, influential, and talented Derry Music Teachers; Karen Kerin (Slade to me), Cindy Baltzer, Melody Vigo, and Jim Julian. Without these amazing people, teachers, and musicians, God only knows where I’d be today.
And please know that I teach high school choir at Norwin. I chose this profession because I wanted to change the lives of my students the way that my music teachers changed mine. Now that’s inspiration.

It's sad that Derry would cut the music program. Some of my best memories are from chorus or musical.

Music isn't just somthing we learn as kids but it can be a great stress release for anyone having a hard time. For young students this might be the path they take to relieve stress besides using drugs and developing other bad habits. From my personal experience music has helped me live threw the toughest times in life. Derry's music department was important to me because I got to meet people with the same passion for music as me. Some of these people turned into lifetime friends. Keep music classes going Derry!!!

There is nothing like the band. Let’s be perfectly honest. I never attended a football game there for the football. I only showed up for the band.

Music is more than just a couple notes that sound good, just like football is more than a bunch of guys pushing each other over to get a ball.

The music education I received while at Derry schools was critical to my academic and personal growth. Now, as a mother I am very thankful that our schools in CT offer music education.
