Community public schools should be preserved - especially when that is what the community wants!

I've read about this situation including the schools reasons for protesting this decision. As a 50+ year educator, I agree whole heartedly with their position. This decision is NOT RIGHT!. This school should continue to be supported. It sounds like a wonderful, very worthwhile school. I would be willing to support my opinions in more depth if it will help. I have taught for 50+ years in a wide range of settings including my work as a well known researcher and teacher educator.

Every citizen should have a well run public school to which they can send their children. Charter schools are not public schools. Community members have no influence over their spending or other governance.

The quality of a schools education must be predicated on dedicated teachers who understand the process and principles of learning, as well as, having an understanding of the principles and characteristics of human development for children in all of the stages of their development !!! Good education also depends on teachers understanding individual children, their needs and the social/economic factors that affect and effect children !! Standardized tests, computer models and technology cannot and never will have these capacities !!!
Perhaps, too we should remember the wisdom of Albert Einstein almost seven decades ago !!! He tried to tell us that when technology outpaced our ability to reason and to communicate with each other ".... we would have created a nation of idiots !!"
We must entrust our schools to dedicated teachers who both understand care about our children, not to profiteers and business men and women who frankly are not knowledgeable about either the learning process or children !!!

My children's neighborhood school was closed to convert the site into a charter school. That closure caused upheaval, resentment and distrust of the district for years. Charters should be an alternative. They shouldn't displace a neighborhood school That is not the intent of charter school law or Prop 39. That law grants unused school sites to charter schools, not occupied sites. No school can be converted to a charter without the consent of 50% of the teachers. Read the decision in Rogers et al in Sacramento Superior Court 2003.

Just as a county clerk must not be allowed to use the government to impose her religious beliefs on a community, so should a charter school not be allowed to use the government to impose itself on a community that does not want and has rejected their presence.

The word "public" means that our democracy depends on the public square, the public school, the public discourse. Good luck!

Let communities "own" their schools not businesses. It is the job of a school board to maintain and enhance public schools, it's crazy that folks have to ask for this...it should be a given.

What a brave and important quest you have embarked on. (Oops. I'm sure your students would "never" end a sentence with a preposition) I can only pray that you succeed in protecting your kids - especially the over 40% of students that are either deaf or hard of hearing, or have special education needs - from the charter menace you face.

It appears that the board of Community Roots Academy has the intellectual capacity to find their own location. Excellent project based activity...much to learn.
