I went to the primary school many, many years ago and can imagine what a beautiful setting this nursery is and such an important provision for this rural community.

Our eldest attended Cortachy nursery before we moved home to Shetland in 2025. At that time all places were filled and if we hadn't left then another child would have missed out on a place there. Numbers do fluctuate, it makes sense to wait a year at least. In the meantime children attending Cortachy nursery still benefit from engagement with other ages within the smaller school setting which is incredibly valuable.
Compared with that the nurseries in Kirrie are at the other end of the spectrum with such high numbers and less all-school-age involvement.

I frequently meet the children from the nursery when I am out walking in Cortachy. They are the most amazing group of kids. They are friendly, curious and so eloquent. They clearly love their time at nursery and have fantastic relationships with the staff.

We have lost so much at Cortachy & Dykehead.. Our church has closed. The local pub has been demolished. The Post Office closed years ago. We have no hall, meeting place or polling station. The school and nursery are the only remaining facility to support families wishing to live in this beautiful area.

These kind of settings are great for rural communities and this services not just cortachy but the nearby area. I have a child who would be nursery age in 1.5 years and would consider the nursery as a great place for my child. We cannot lose these rural childcare settings as this will cause greater strain in the towns and be detrimental to the rural communities which would no longer be a family friendly place to live
