Indigenous people already have a holiday dedicated. Let’s keep a holiday that started the free world and brought culture, arts, medicine and politics Columbus Day.

Is this a sorry attempt by the CT Boad of Education to revive the anti Italian/Italian American bias of the Past?
Vergogna! (Shame, shame!)

you don't erase history by denying it....you teach it in context of the times, and we learn from it. Your actions would only defeat the purpose. HISTORY HAPPENED!!!

Such terrible times we are living through. We should be teaching the youth to have pride in our past and in our achievements by Christopher Columbus as a representative of our Italian immigrants hard work and sacrifice. Please don't let our country further deteriorate. Children are killing themselves. They have no one to look up to. The media has destroyed every hero that exists. People that fought and died - put their blood and their fortunes on the line. Jesus Christ taught us "He who is without sin should throw the first stone." "With malice towards none!". That's all the kids are seeing is malice. Please don't let this happen.

At a time when we are trying to recognize and unite the various groups in our American society, it is divisive to take this type of action. You are pitting 2 groups against each other without consideration of one group's point of view. A very short-sighted, uninformed knee-jerk reaction.

As president of the largest Italian-American Service Organization in the US, I respectfully request that you reconsider the notion to rename Columbus Day. Regardless of your intentions, this action is demeaning, insulting, and disrespectful to all Italian-Americans. Over time, Columbus Day has become synonymous with celebrations of our Italian heritage for many social and historical reasons. In addition, much of the circulating information concerning Columbus is historically inaccurate as it neglects the many positive aspects of Columbus' explorations and has placed this information totally out of temporal context. His accomplishments as a daring navigator can go uncontested; he is emblematic of the millions of immigrants and their pursuit of economic opportunity, religious freedom, and hope for a better life. "To the world he gave a world!"
Our organization wholeheartedly supports the idea of a special day to honor indigenous people. However, we would suggest that you consider offering one of the many other days of the year for this purpose.
Sincerely,
Frank N. De Frank, M.D.

The BOE needs to explain why it is ok to disrespect Italians and specifically Christopher Columbus during Italian-American Month. This appears to me another form of discrimination and hate.
