Anyone willing to take the time to do the research, will find that none of the wild accusations made about Columbus’ character are supported by primary source historical documents. The primary source documents prove that Columbus was a devout Christian who treated the Indigenous People with good will and respect. How tragic that in one of the best educated countries in the world, so many are either too lazy to take the time to research the truth, or worse yet, are willing to sacrifice the truth to promote their own misguided political and social agendas. Christopher Columbus’ courageous voyage opened the door to over 500 years of worldwide immigration to the Americas by people seeking a better life for their families. Columbus was a hero who deserves an honored place in world history.

I have a silk bookmarker that celebrates the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus. This bookmark was the work of the Public School system of the United States. For more than 500 years we have honored this great man and now these crazy groups want to change history. This bookmark meant so much to me as an Italian-American that I had it framed and hung it on the wall of my home.

History cannot be erased. We learn from it. Christopher Columbus and those that came after him, too, faced horrible conditions. You do what you have to do. They responded to that period of time in our history and did what they had to do. History cannot be 'erased.' Period!

Christopher Columbus was the first civil rights activist of the Americas and committed NONE of the atrocities attributed to him; he never raped, maimed, murdered, enslaved, kidnapped or stole anything or anyone.
Those atrocities were committed by the hidalgos who REBELLED against his authority and by Francisco de Bobadilla, who usurped the governorship from him. Columbus constantly fought for the rights of the tribal people, conducted the first "underground railroad" on his Second Voyage, and successfully petitioned the Crown of Spain to enact the first civil rights legislation of the Americas. Columbus Day must remain to honor this, the greatest hero of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries.
