The more things change at Colby the more they stay the same. These one sided dictatorial proclamations sure warm the alums feelings towards giving and participating in reunions and homecomings. They should just be honest and say that they don't like the rugby traditions of being a bit rowdy and zealous about the bonds shared between generations of players. The bond Colby wants you to develop is an unswerving deferential position to whatever whimsical social policy they want to cram down the students and alumni throats. This decision just reeks of Colby's past blunders.

I'm a Bowdoin Rugby alumni ('03), we heard what happened and our whole alumni network supports you guys/girls. We're rivals on the pitch and don't want that to end. I'll re-post the link to this on our alumni facebook page, good luck, hope it helps.

This is a devastating decision that alienates a huge percentage of students and alumni, the overwhelming majority of whom love Colby dearly. The decision to cut the rugby program was either made without consideration for how significantly it would upset, frustrate, and ultimately disengage a large group of dedicated Colby-loving alumni, or, even worse, without concern for this consequence. Assuming the former is true and the administration simply did not consider how deeply this would affect so many in the Colby community, I hope those involved in the decision-making process have the wisdom and humility to look at other options. If the latter is true, and college officials made this decision with the full knowledge that it would deeply hurt hundreds of dedicated alumni, then I suppose there is nothing more to be said. Colby, please show us you care about the hundreds of us who stand behind the rugby program, who believe in our school, and who desperately want to remain excited, engaged, and proud to call ourselves alumni of Colby College.

It's horribly sad that this decision would be made without input from the students or other programs

I play for Franklin Pierce Women's Rugby and I can honestly say Colby Sawyer is one of our favorite teams to play. On and off the field they are polite. Their competitive nature has helped them succeed and I have no doubt that their true competitive nature will keep their program intact. Colby-sawyer hosted playoffs this year and they took great care of every team that attended. Save the colby-sawyer program!

If it's safe enough to be in the Olympics, it's safe enough for Colby College.

Although I did not play rugby while at Colby I don't think the decision to end it should have been made so quickly. While I know that more and more research is being done about head injuries and their effects, and I admire that Colby is taking a stand in honor of its students' safety, I believe it is completely unjust to take this action while other contact sports, especially hockey and football remain unchanged. Club sport or varsity sport, it shouldn't matter if safety is truly the top priority.

A poor decision based on outdated ideas of our sport. Ask your collegues at Middlebury if rugby fits with NESCAC.

Please reevaluate this decision, and consider the input of both students and alumni.

As a Middlebury rugby alum it's disappointing to see a fellow NESCAC school plan to drop one of the most diverse and international sports.

Bates Class of '05. Played for four years and was the captain of the team. The idea that Colby would be even considering canceling this program is a shame. Rugby is making its debut in the 2016 Olympics and is growing across the USA. Guess what isn't in the Olympics. Football. Guess which sport has more concussions. Football. Bet they aren't going to cancel that program.

This decision by the Colby administration is poor at best.
