If Colby wants to get rid of expensive, collision sports,start with Football. Rugby is much safer (getting rid of the armor) and decidedly less expensive. Cleats, shorts, jersey, mouth piece. Compare that with football. There is no logic in getting rid of rugby and keeping football. Plus, it is a sport that you can play for many years beyond college, unlike American football. I did.

The benefits far outweigh the toll rugby takes on your body. The dicipline of rugby grows us as people, as well as in our athletic pursuits. It's one thing to say you are cutting the program for lack of funding, but to say that rugby is dangerous is like saying football or basketball or any other contact sport is dangerous. Are you going to cut all of those too?

It would be a shame not to have Rugby at Colby College since I know it has been a wonderful way to connect for so many kids!

Not even in college yet.. all i know is that colby rugby has changed my brothers life. In many ways I think this quote by Dylan Thomas holds true to this situation: "I will not go quietly into that good night but instead rage against the dying light." Impermanence is, what I find, perhaps the most melancholic aspect of life, the fact that everything comes to an end. But I also think this is why I have made fighting entropy part of my personal creed. I cannot accept the ephemeral nature of all good things in life and thats why I choose to "not go quietly" and do as much as I can do from my high school dorm room. I have never played rugby nor have I ever seen a match, but I know what it is like to be passionate about a sport. I will not let go, I will extend this beautiful sport at Colby. Or at least I'm going to try.

This is absurd and highly paternalistic. I played rugby at Williams College for 4 years and it was the best part of my college experience. I have friends on the Colby and they are a great bunch of folks. People can decided for themselves what groups they want to join and what risks they want to take. Save Colby rugby!

And what about football? Where is the growing awareness there? Plus the school should support the growth of this sport because of its significant growth in America. It is already so popular in other countries and our participation is just expected to grow, especially with the readmittance into the Olympics.
