rugby is a fantastic sport that empowers it's players and club members with decision making and when run correctly clubs are socially conscious and contribute to the greater college community. When coached and played correctly injuries are comparable to most other team sports

Colby would be making a big mistake if it cut it's women's rugby program. Rugby is a sport that empowers women in a very powerful way, and a progressive school like Colby should be supporting any such activity.

Rugby is an amazing sport and an incredible opportunity to learn about leadership and sportsmanship. I was a Bates Rugby player and our average GPA was most definitely higher than any other team. So the rugby stereotype is pure ignorance.

I don't really care for the Colby team, but they are such a huge part of Maine rugby. They have always been difficult competitors. It would be a shame to see that part of Maine lose out on playing such a great sport.

I'm from Ireland and am a passionate about my Rugby, I feel that the game should be allowed to carry on. Our club here has hosted many college and club teams from the United States in the last few years and my own personal dealings with a club started a long time before that. Rugby as a sport world wide has evolved more than any other sport, if it is coached correctly, we coach both boys and girls from the age of 7 and the both play mixed aged up to 10/11 then they divide into their own age grades. From there the training develops to each group. I also watch ice hockey and American football and I have to say I would much rather get tackled on a rugby pitch than get hit by a defensive tackle from New York or a defence man like Chara from the bruins even with all the protection. Sorry just have to say that I think it is WRONG

Rugby has fewer concussions than many other contact sports and is a safe better team sport than many, many others....i played college football in the pac 10 so i have some basis for this opinion....

It would be beneficial to contact the Boston children's hospital about the three year study on injuries and rugby they conducted a few years back. When I was coaching in Boston our team helped with the study. The findings were very surprising and proved that concussions where not the most frequent issue. This study was a part of a national study qualifying the sport for to be played at the high school level and tinsurance purposes .

We all want to make sure rugby is played in a safe environment and under proper medical supervision. The college explained that appropriate staffing is too expensive for a club sport. Why not engage in a dialog with the team, alumni and the rugby community in Maine to explore alternatives before eliminating the teams? Additional funds could be raised, and perhaps savings could be found to bring the number down from $150,000 asserted by the administration. Also, when I played at Bates the spring 1984 season was cancelled by the athletic club, so the team just moved off campus for the season – no coach, trainer or supervision of any kind. Is this not the likely outcome of Colby’s current decision?

The game I played until I was 50 is the greatest team sport in the world, it is the only sport where its professional would play for free if asked. Colby's rugby program will deliver fervent alumni support to the school over the next fifty years if allowed to exist.
