Far from cut backs or closure, this successful school should be viewed as a shining star and a model to hold up to every other school in the county to emulate. While I do not live in the area served by CCES, I do live in Monroe County and believe the schools here can and must do better and the board needs to stop trying to drag everyone down in a race to the bottom with our education system.

Dear Monroe County, Tennessee Leaders and Residents, My husband and I were blessed by buying a home in Coker Creek after Hurricane Katrina destroyed our waterfront home in Louisiana. We knew nothing about the area; nor did we know any of the people residing there. I was also blessed with an assignment to write for an organization promoting life and business in Coker Creek. Both began a love affair with Coker creek and her people. This assignment gave me an unparalleled opportunity to get to know the area and true Appalachian American life, as exemplified in our small hamlet in the Cherokee National Forest. I attribute much of the lifestyle to the presence of the community support for the small school that nurtures each child as if he or she was the child of all who work as staff and volunteers in Coker creek Elementary School. Private citizens donated the land on which the school sets; they also designed the school, based on best practices that they found in larger communities. This school is still an effort supported by the Ruritan Club, The Coker Creek Heritage Group, the businesses in Coker Creek, the many churches of Coker Creek, and many private citizens, whether or not we have children in the school. I have written extensively about the wonderful way of rural mountain life exemplified by the Coker Creek community, both in the several newsletters that I was hired to author and in a blog TnMtnHome.blogspot.com, and two books Our Tennessee Mountain Home and Our Tennessee Mountain Home II, available through Amazon.com, Coker Creek Heritage Welcome Center, and Tellico Plains Library. Coker Creek Elementary School is the heart and soul of this Appalachian hamlet, the type that built the United States of America. Where else will you find a whole community circling the school in prayer? Please consider how many blessings the children raised up to middle school in this loving environment go on share with our earth. We need more, not less, of these intimate school setti
