*Sergio has always been someone who I could look up to back when I was working at the YMCA. Sergio has helped me developed into becoming a better coach and counselor for our YMCA programs, even when there were times when assisted him with teaching PE at Torrey Pines Elementary school. Sergio always showed us examples of how we should conduct our duties. As a YMCA counselor, Sergio has always been someone who we could rely on and he has always been there to support us and the children he taught whenever we were in need of him. Sergio has been a profound influence in my life since I was a 5 year old in 1996 when he worked at the ymca. We still are close to this day. There are few mentors in life that have his commitment and compassion. Loosing him would be a great loss.

As a YMCA counselor, Sergio has always been someone who we could rely on and he has always been there to support us and the children he taught whenever we were in need of him. He also showed proper ways of how to work with and teach kids better.

I am here to make a statement , loud and clear , I’ve known Sergio for 36 years , he was my 4 children’s PE teacher at the YMCA before going over to Torrey Pines , there is not a more kind , helpful , most responsible, respectful teacher that I know . I stand with Sergio that he be aloud to continue to teach at Torrey Pines high school , THIRTY YEARS & GOING STRONG , in a world where we are all being crippled by Covid , Fentanyl, crimes , Sergio is a SOLD ROCK TO THE STUDENTS AT TOREEY PINES ! My vote is he be able to stay & continue to teach until he retires , Sergio is loved by everyone !!!! Janet Nilsson

It has been over 10 years since our 2 daughters graduated from TPE but we still remember Coach Sergio. His energy and enthusiasm for physical education helped inspire our daughters to play sports throughout high school and college and to enjoy healthy and active lives today. With our current technology-focused world, teaching children to be physically active is more important than ever. Please keep Coach Sergio as he is part of the heart and soul of TPE.

I can think of no other person who has influenced as many children and adults in our immediate community than Coach Sergio has. Both of my kids (TPES alums) and my husband and I are active and athletic because of his positive and cheerful influence. Coach was the person both kids wanted to be photographed with on 5th grade graduation day. Families clamored for the opportunity to have their kids join him for fundraising outings such as indoor rock climbing. He has saved at least two lives because he jumped in and knew what to do. When he is out about skiing, ocean swimming, biking, boogie boarding, he welcomes TPES families into his world. Thousands of kids from this school have learned to enjoy outdoor activity, and countless hundreds have gone on to excel athletically. There can be no justification for removing this remarkable teacher/mentor from the TPES community after 30 years. The principal needs to listen to the community and do the right thing. Notice that the petition is signed by people from all over the world whose kids attended TPES.

Don’t sacrifice great teachers who are invested in every child they teach. His dedication to this school and the community is unmatched and shouldn’t be taken for granted. I went to TPES 10+ years ago and really enjoyed having him as a coach, remembering his class to this day. TPES needs to take initiative and ensure that he stays!

I have great memories of Sergio teaching my kids PE and athletics with energy and enthusiasm at TPES many years ago. I cannot imagine that there aren’t lower priority budget items with SDUSD than cutting Sergio’s position. Please retain him!

Coach Sergio has been an active and productive member of our community for quite some time. All of my children have been coached by him and they love his enthusiasm, encouragement and always happy personality. He is so good with children and losing him at Torrey Pines Elementary will be detrimental to the mental and physical health of our children. We want coach Sergio to continue with Physical Education and coaching at Torrey Pines Elementary.

As one of his past students of almost 8 years ago, he is still one of the greatest people I’ve gotten the chance to meet and definetly still deserves his job and more.
