I really have Coach Sergio in the highest regard. I have gone through PE with an asthmatic kid who was not controlled by medication, and even before we managed to get her an IEP, he modified PE for her so she could still do it. When she developed knee problems, he had us give him a copy of the exercises by our orthopedic doctor and incorporated them in PE. I strongly support this petition.

Coach Sergio not only teaches how to do sports and why but also attitude. He helps the kids be healthier and happier by going far beyond his duties as a teacher.

The very notion of firing Coach Sergio is absurd on so many levels.
I might have only had Coach Sergio for two years, but he was fantastic. His enthusiasm and genuine care for individual students and the school is unforgettable and a highlight to everyone. Reading the long chain of universally beloved comments reflects his contributions to the community. He's been a member of the community, and to strip his energy and years of contributions away from the school would be criminal.
In addition, removing a teacher of his tenure and subject is nonsensical. Covid-19 saw many students not exercise nearly as much as in the past, and the school's proposed solution is to...remove their highly experienced and qualified instructor for PE? Not only is this counterintuitive, but TPES seems to either intend on abandoning PE (a catastrophic loss) or believe that finding a new, qualified PE teacher will be easy, which it clearly wouldn't be. This also sends negative messages to the teacher staff - if one of the most highly tenured and needed members is not safe from being cut, no one is. Cutting Coach Sergio benefits absolutely no one except the school pocketbooks, and if that truly is the reason, that's messed up - the community would certainly work together to provide for him if such action is necessary.
I don't have any strictly personal anecdotes of my own, but as the comment section conveys, people's lives would be worse off without him. The next generation should have access to the highest quality teachers, which Coach Sergio certainly is. When he does finally retire, it should be on his terms alone, not at the whims of the administration.
Speaking of which, the Richards administration has proven itself to be in decline. I can confidently say that Sergio was a huge part of my childhood and elementary school experience. The best PE coach out there. TPES would not be the same without him. For the sake of the kids, parents, and the whole TPES community, please keep him there.

My children love PE and the activities provided by Coach Sergio. They need physical activity at school beyond recess. Please bring back rotations for our kids. These teachers and coaches are so special.

The very fact that Coach Sergio's job is at stake reflects how Torrey Pines has become a shadow of its former self. I may have only had him for two years, but he taught with passion and genuine love for his job and for his students, and for such a long-tenured and clearly beloved teacher's job to be at risk is insulting.
It sends a horrible message to other long-tenured teachers at the school. Coach Sergio's one of the longest tenured teachers at the school in a subject with no other teachers, but if his job is safe, no one is. This has horrible ramifications on staff security and decreases faith in the administration.
If Torrey Pines assumes that they can simply find a new PE teacher with just as much experience and care due to administrative or financial troubles, it reflects significant neglect and failure of the Richards administration to respect the will of the community and their staff, a trend that has not stopped ever since its 2019 inception. In addition, the Covid era has seen decreases in student exercise, and removing a PE teacher would prove counterintuitive.
Generations of students have had wonderful memories of PE due to this man, and to remove that without hesitation is asinine. While I may not have too many anecdotes to share, simply perusing through the comment section lists so many priceless, personal memories that would have not been present without Coach Sergio.
Principal Richards in 2018 cited that "(needing) to get a vibe for the community’s needs" was one of her priorities as principal and claimed that " students have to want to be there to learn". This action represents a complete contradiction of this principle.
Removing universally beloved, highly qualified, long-tenured, and much-needed Coach Sergio is not the solution to the issues of the community or the school. It simply doesn't make sense on any level.
If this action is indeed taken, it truly is the nadir of Torrey Pines.

During PE swimming lessons at the YMCA our son didn’t feel up to the swim test. Coach Sergio made a point to personally teach him how to swim. He took him under his wings as a helper in class too. When we ran into him at the gym, he was beyond encouraging of our boy and his exercise. He doesn’t just do his job, he goes beyond with genuine contagious enthusiasm. Please do whatever it takes to keep him in his job.
