For nearly 15 years, Mike Martines has operated the Dee Glen Smith Tennis Facility to the benefit of an appreciative community. He turned a struggling, run-down facility into a first-rate tennis center which is enjoyed and appreciated by sports enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. He did it with his heart, soul, tenacity, determination, skill, and an unending desire to create a first-rate public recreation facility. Mike Martines is well-respected, fiscally responsible, a hard worker, a dedicated manager, an admired leader, an inspirational coach and teacher, and our friend. For the high standard he has set and maintained for years, Mike Martines, and his exceptional staff, have earned the right to continue serving the sports community and the community as a whole. They have a proven track record upon which Salt Lake City can rely.
We, the undersigned, tennis players, parents of tennis players, grandparents of tennis players, tennis fans, neighbors, and community members, strongly petition Salt Lake City to renew the contract for Mike Martines to operate the Dee Glen Smith Tennis Center (“Coach Mike’s”). There is no one more deserving or more capable.
The stories shared by students and families about their growth under Mike show that this facility is about more than just tennis courts. We are currently preparing to present this collection of experiences to the city leadership to ensure they understand what is at stake for our community.

Reaching this milestone confirms that the impact Mike has made on our community is felt far beyond the court. It is encouraging to see so many people acknowledge the dedication he brings to his work each day.

Ridiculous that they would even consider letting him go. Mike is a staple in this city.
