Why is anyone going to want to be a teacher if every time they try to teach something of substance they could lose their job? She wasn't saying they should think this is ok, she was making them look at the meanings of this photo and what they can do to fix things!

Children need to be taught how to THINK and that is what this assignment was about. Basically, the teacher was doing what she is paid to do, teach kids to think critically.

No teacher should lose her job for an assignment causing her students to have original thoughts on critical, difficult issues. These issues must be dealt with in our society, and we need to begin with our youth or we'll keep repeating them in our future.

Do you know why there's a teacher shortage? Because caring, intelligent, creative teachers are harassed by narrow minded, mean spirited, red neck parents (hello Dayton, Nevada!) who bully weak administrators. If the USA ever wants to see their children reach the top of the educational ladder they better start to realize that CURRENT events keep us CURRENT and not in the dark ages.

I know for a fact that this school is damn lucky to have such a high quality.,Caring , intelligent teacher that,encourages her students to "think" about issues that affect them . Shame on the school administration for not standing by their teacher.!

Very disapointed in LCSD. It's a political cartoon, and I think that they should be proud to have teachers that think outside the box, and find innovative ways to spark discussion in the classroom. Just because a couple of people got offended...so what!! This is real world stuff!! This lady should be supported by her district, not punished. This is one of the reasons it's so hard to find good teachers. Non Supportive ADMIN!!

I see that this was taught throughout the school semester / year, no issues before. It appears on facebook and a handful of parents that were not monitoring their child's assignment previously are now all up in arms. It is no different than photos of war, anti blacks from the 70s.

This was an assignment that showed current events that happened in 2015... good way to bring up a good topic of conversation... no need to fire a good teacher over this.

Argumentative writing!!! If this parent has an issue with the picture and assignment wait until they get to college they have a surprise coming where you don't agree with assignments or people's point of views but the assignment has to be done

To all those who are offended, I'm disappointed in you and our society. To have a writing prompt be "offensive" is the worst way to complain when it most likely has no relation between you're actual emotions and the picture. And if you are offended if a picture, what do you want us to do? Burn it? Delete it? Well, let me tell you something, the world does not revolve around you, suck it up. If you really are offended, clearly who ever raised you needs to stop being a trouble-making, no good, society ruining person that has nothing but free time on their hands to complain. Shame on you. It is the 21st century and we all should realize that everything in the prompt picture all happened in America; if you can look at it and be offended, you are clearly an ignorant, naïve, creature that cannot even want to realize that the world is this way. But, if all you can do is "be offended," then you "offend" me, I want you and your whole family to be fired. Because you offended me. Don't like it? Too bad, the picture offends you. :)

This is ridiculous. What on Earth has Lyon County come to? We now punish teachers for asking our children to think?
Considering now more than ever removing my children from publuc school. I can do a better job in my own home.

When I was in high school we wrote papers all the time on current events and history. This is reality and it was only supposed to be for educational purposes to see students interpretation. Keep this teacher around and give her another chance.

It would be a failure of our school district to lose this teacher because of the content in question. Education should be designed to inspire thought and encourage free speech. Our youth should not be coddled in the hopes that the school district offends on one.

Best teachers I had were those that made me think and discussed every side of an issue. I am white, but I never realized all the ways that people of color are unfairly treated. So I researched it.. And was appalled! Having to pay more for car and home loans, being passed over for jobs, assumed to be "thugs" by merely walking down the street. And shot/beaten by cops who play judge, jury, executioner within seconds of arriving on the scene. And then there's the verbal slurs by Faux Network and politicians.
