We must our children to able to express their opinions on today's complex issues. In doing this, we must allow educators to address the issues of our society in ways that our children can connect with.

As a teacher, I've delt with similar backlash for talking about race. I won't stop speaking truth.

Asking 11th grade history students to discuss whether, and if so how, this picture represents our nation’s history is perfectly reasonable. Ms Clausen probably should have expected some negative reaction, since the picture is deliberately inflammatory, and some people were bound to react to that without regard to the teaching context, but that does not excuse the school district’s actions.

This situation has been blown way out of proportion. This is a political cartoon. This kind of propaganda has been around for years and has been discussed in schools for years. It is controversial but what propaganda isn't. Additionally, she was asking this question of seniors, young adults, who in 6 months will be able to make decisions on their own. So why is this an issue? She shouldn't lose her job because of this.

It's hard for teachers to do their job when they get in trouble for doing just that.

Let the teacher teach. We have all had to do an assignment like this at some point during our school years! God forbid a teacher encourages critical thinking and thinking outside the box.

Teachers are supposed to encourage their students to think, compare, contrast, agree, disagree. That is what great teachers do. She should be congratulated, not scolded.

The reason she is being fired is completely rediculious. How do you expect the future of our country to grow up and do things right if we can't see what the previous generation did wrong.

I understand that the conservatives, the GOP, the Christian Right does not want children to be taught to think for themselves, to improve their critical thinking skills. However, Ms. Clausen is doing her job as a teacher, and I understand (from this test question and other comments) that she is doing an outstanding job. Do NOT listen to a couple of scared conservatives pining for the days when no one could talk about race, and they assumed that they were the top of the heap instead of equal with everyone else. If they had had a teacher like Ms. Clausen when they were growing up, they may have matured a bit more.
Keep her!!!
