Why are we suspending teachers for teaching our kids how to think for themselves? If you want your kids to only see certain things, then send them to a religious institution where they sensor everything to fit their views. We need to show our kids how the world really is, it not all just butterflies and rainbows.

Ms.Clausen did absolutely nothing wrong. She wanted to bring a current event and issue to justice and teach our kids the truth about slavery. Parents need to get the real facts of what their kids are being taught rather than blow -something that was supposed to educate the kids -out of proportion.

None of the images in this picture would individually be banned from the history class. The image is neither pornographic, nor graphically violent.
The teacher's stance was not to tell the students how to feel about the image; instead, she presented an artifact that they might have run across in their world, and asked them to generate their own responses.
That is how history, critical thinking and media awareness are learned. The struggles our students live are real, and teachers need to be sensitive to that, but if we terminate teachers at the slightest sign of controversy, then we create an environment that will sap our children of their intelligence and autonomy.

My cousin is one of her current students; she told me that Ms. Clausen is the only teacher that challenges her to think.

This is so sad! We as a society Shouldn't have to agree on everything! It's a tiptoe community where if we say or do something where a question is raised and or someone feels taboo on the topic all hell breaks loose . Sad

The only thing that is offensive here are the facts that tell the story behind the creation of the picture. Do we think we should raise children to never see or judge or deal with offensive things? Adulthood will probably be a big shock then..

Judgement may have been off...but you can't sugar coat life..these kids get out into real life and really have no clue what's going on out there...I believe this teacher was trying to teach..trying to stir a debate in the class not in the whole community

Our students need this teacher. These kinds of assignments are what help them to grow up, and are also the kind that stick with them for a long time. Very valuable.
