A number of my patients and supervisees have worked at this excellent service. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Essential service

Recently, at a time of crisis in my life, I have benefitted from the free service offered by the Camden Psychotherapy. This is the second time in thirty years that I have needed psychotherapy, without it I would not do the work I do now, or have the depth of understanding that I have managed to secure.

Camden Psychotherapy Unit is a valuable and much-needed service for those who cannot afford to pay for private psychotherapy

It seems extremely short-sighted of Camden NHS not to fund this very highly thought of independent unit.

Its our duty to protect the most vulnerable in our communities.. The extent to which we do this is a very food measure of the quality of our civilisation.

It is crazy to consider closing this vital resource

One size really does not fit all and this short term cost saving measure is very likely to have longer term systemic cost implications for those in need and their families. Please reconsider. Thank you.

I urge you to fund this essential service. Psychoanalytical psychotherapy deals with longstanding mental health issues which effect families, relationships and the capacity to work. This form of treatment is increasingly the province of those who can afford to pay for it. Please support this essential charity.

This provision is vital for those who can't afford it privately. Please provide funding to help the Camden Psychotherapy Unit with their finance

This service is needed both for the sake of individuals and for the whole community.

These cuts are interwoven with other cuts that which disproportionately impact on people on lower incomes and make them more vulnerable to depression, anxiety and other mental health issues (such as lack of access to secure social housing, and to benefits when wages cannot cover the cost of living).

It is tragic that the CPU is under threat of closure. In my experience of working with parents with mental health problems and illnesses in the NHS, the repeated refrain is the insufficiency of IAPT services to meet the needs of those with complex histories, often involving sexual abuse, domestic violence, childhood experiences of neglect and abuse that have been reawakened through having children, trauma resulting from these events or other adult experiences such as torture or war experiences. These difficulties are further compounded for any adult with a learning disability or physical illness. We also know that any woman with the propensity of a mental health problem or history during adolescence is more likely to present with difficulties again if they have children. For example they are more likely to have a post partum psychosis. For those people who are also parents, the benefit from psychotherapy to help them better manage their lives impacts also on their children and hence the next generation of adults. The preventative element of psychotherapy is also evidenced and has significant cost benefits in the short term, as people are better able to function in their daily lives, for example by remaining in employment, as well as the medium and longer term benefits that accrue for them and any dependents. Shorter term treatments, largely based on CBT are not relational and whilst helpful to those with mild and some types of moderate illness, for example obsessional behaviour or phobias, they are not well suited to those with more complex presentations, especially those that are transgenerational in nature. I can only urge those making this decision not to close the CPU because once a provision like this is gone it is very hard and takes years to rebuild. Valuable expertise is being jettisoned from the NHS in a way that is unecessary and poorly conceived.

Long term treatment, when needed saves a lot of money in the long run. Free availability to therapy should be a right. I worked in the NHS as a Child Psychotherapist.

Mental Health services have been hit hard by cuts over many years now so fewer and fewer people who need help will receive it through the NHS. CPU is a vitally needed and well used service. I support their request for the reinstatement of their funding to be able to carry on their important and needed service.

The loss of this provision would be a tragedy, just when people whose benefits and rights are being removed may need it most.
