This is just the start of a rural debate on this issue lets hope a ripple effect will now spread nationwide and we can not only stop bansha s clinic closing but other clinics in rural Ireland. We have a meeting in bansha on November 27th at 7.30 in the GAA centre to highlight this issue.

Rural practice has been decimated, INCLUDING in Feakle. As rural GPs, our patients and communities are suffering – not just GP services – rural GPs most often live in their communities as integral components of those communities and are also employers in those communities. Rural general practice is now tottering on the brink – multiple straws which are coming together to break the camel’s back. In the case of Bansha, it has tottered over the brink. Here are some reasons why. Disproportionate Cuts to Rural Practice  Rural practice allowances have been cut – these were an absolutely necessary support payment to recognise the fiscal challenges with providing services in rural communities  Distance codes were removed – again an absolutely crucial support payment necessary to recognise the distances involved for rural GPs in visiting elderly, sick, immobile patients at home or those patients with terminal illnesses and supporting them have dignity, comfort and care at home. Manpower Issues  Aging workforce – 20% of GPs are over 60, with a third over 55. 52% of GPs in Mayo are over 55. 36% in Carlow are over 60.  Emigration of younger highly skilled GPs – Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK – better pay and conditions – 12.5% of GP trainees are planning to emigrate with 90% of medical students planning to emigrate – damning indictment of the state of our health services Planning Divorced from Reality  Rural general practice works – however, the HSE is trying to change the landscape. One example is the apparent desire to close small single handed practices (most rural GPs) and drive us into large primary care centres. HOWEVER, while 89% of urban dwellers live within walking distance of their GP, only 7% of rural patients live within walking distance of their GP.
