As a member of the Hawthorne Caballeros and an elementary music teacher, this is not a good move for any school district to make. Music and band is integral to any child’s education. If you want the success at the secondary level and beyond you need to start at the elementary level.

Having grown up in Hawthorne - between the Caballeros and the HS band, I know how important music education is. Music ed can provide young people with a pathway to a lifelong passion with unlimited opportunities. I now live in Easton, PA where the HS band is 300 members strong, and I see what it does for both the students and the community.

As a graduate of Hawthorne High School and someone who learned the value of music in my life from the district I vehemently disagree with the cutting of music education in Hawthorne schools. . Music education is not only noise its a foundation that teaches students the basics of life. It teaches discipline, creativity and opens so many doors to create strong adults. My career started in the high school and opened the doors to let me become a member of the Hawthorne Caballeros, our home town treasure. Music taught me how to work together for a common goal, how to respect each other and create something beautiful. I formed friendships that have lasted my entire life.
It it never easy to make fiscal decisions, but music and arts are much more valuable in creating strong well rounded citizens and should be one of the last things to be eliminated from curriculum .

You cannot imagine the disservice you are doing when you eliminate a school band program, even at the elementary level. Elementary band is how band programs grow to the high level programs that exist in the upper grades. For many students, band is the only reason they go to school. It is a place they are challenged, have a safe environment to express themselves, and to experience something unlike anything else. When you defund music, you are causing huge problems and unnecessary suffering to kids that really need these programs.

This society has done enough to our children with technology and now you want to take one of the longest and beautiful activities that get our kids off tech and the streets.
