The education my 2 children received at their alternative middle school, meant a meaningful educational environment and fostered more informed, and engaged citizens. Funding for these schools is essential not only for our students but our communities.

Eloquent words about diversity being our strength and commitment to equity are meaningless if they are not backed by the resources and decisions to put words into practice. This means allocating sufficient funds and teachers to support healthy learning and development. Toronto is a diverse city, and the means toward equity must include diverse options to meet the unique needs of diverse students and communities. My 2 children grew up in alternative schools that they could thrive in and are now excellent post-secondary students. Their alternative school experience was critical to their success. Other students across Toronto also deserve opportunities that are not just cookie-cutter look-alikes that can lose touch with so many students. Equity is not possible without resources and access. TDSB should be encouraging MANY MORE alternative schools, rather than strangling the gems we have. FUND ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS NOW!

This attack on Alternative Middle Schools in the TDSB is an attack on human rights, safe space and equity in the largest school board in Canada and one of the largest in North America serving nearly a quarter of a million students each year. The deep cuts contravene the Education Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Safe and Accepting Schools Act. The impact will be on students who have already experienced discrimination in TDSB spaces - now the TDSB is targeting the safe spaces they - and their families - have found to be able to learn. Please sign this petition and speak up for these young people and families - their options for safe and productive learning are being removed. They deserve better!
