I grew up in Almondbury and the library was a vital part of my childhood. It is a treasure that must be preserved and protected.

I have read many of the comments by other library users and totally agree with their views. We campaigned to save the library ten years ago and people's opinions will be just as strong now as they were then! The library will not be used as it is now if it moves to the Sure Start Centre as it is not central to the village and does not have the character of the current building.

Please fight to save this lovely Carnegie library in the village of Almondbury that was donated to the people of the village. There are many activities that happen here all run by ALFA and I fear this thriving community hub will be lost forever if the proposed move to Surestart goes ahead.

I have visited the Almondbury library on a number of occasions and think that it provides a valuable community resource in the heart of the village. The beautiful building is used for a variety of purposes including musical, historical and literary events. It also involves othe community groups such as both the churches and the scouts, as well as local charities. It is an inspiring building and it would be a blow to Almondbury to lose this valuable resource.

This place is the centre of cultural and social activities for local residents, and there is no way that people will be using any other place instead of this building. The magic of this library is in the building itself, it has a charm that no new building can offer, people who use the Library service come here not only for books but also to enjoy the building and other activities. The close proximity of Wesley Centre, All Hallows Church and businesses is another reason this building is attractive to residents. I cannot imagine the Library to be moved into any other building, such move would be a betrayal of local community and their right to enjoy the historical peace with which so many identify.

The Council is committed to pay £50,000 pa until 2026 for the Surestart Centre. The have no idea what to do with the centre, they have not tried to rent it to any suitable businesses. Instead they want to move the library service there from Almondbury Library in Stocks Walk, leave the Stocks Walk building unused (in stock) for a year then dispose of it. Running costs for Stocks Walk are only £5,000 pa which they would use to offset against their £50K pa expense at Surestart. BUT the community would lose a beautiful building valued by the community in Stocks Walk NEVER TO BE REPLACED. From experience, we know that when library services are removed from beautiful buildings loved by their community and moved to dull 70s like structures footfall ceases.
That relocated service dies. Do you want that to happen? Or do you want to contact Cllr Graham Turner at Kirklees and tell him you do not want this to happen. Do you want to demand of him why he is not finding other alternatives to make use of Surestart and to leave Stocks Walk alone! I do. The situation is URGENT. You need to take action immediately. Thank you.
