Ask A Librarian is vital resource for online and distance education programs. Without the AAL service it will be very difficult to provide library reference services to these students. AAL helps many institutions meet SACS requirements for these students.

As we move forward into an increasing reliance to online sources cutting an online reference program is going in the wrong direction. In my job as a reference librarian I am disheartened that high school students, despite their love of electronic devices, still are clueless on how to find good online reliable sources. Ask a Librarian helps bridge that gap by providing an online virtual service for an increasing amount of students who are being encouraged to continue their education outside of the traditional classroom as seen with the passing of Florida’s 2011 Digital Learning Act.

Today I worked with an online student via Ask a Librarian. Having this service available saved this student 1 1/2 hours travel time each way to get assistance for her homework.
