Virtual reference is an essential service for libraries in today's world. If the State Library chooses to discontinue LSTA funding for the state wide Ask-a-Librarian service then it will be up to the MLCs around the state to support such a service in collaboration with the libraries that currently provide some in-kind contributions to the service.

The Ask-A-Librarian service is a very valuable service for residents in smaller, rural couties who do not always have immediate access to a library. it also helps to level "the playing field" between the large counties and the smaller counties who do not have the resources and fundig that the larger counties do in that it is another means that citizens throughtout the state of Florida have to get the information that they need to keep them informed and up to date.

Our students love this service and it saves our library $26,000 a year in staffing. It is a very efficent and effective method of providing reference services.
