Needs vs wants. This facility will push more traffic into an already congested area. If necessary, remodel at much less cost to taxpayers.

Now is not the time to invest in a project that has not been identified that it would be used for something that the residence/taxpayers/voters NEED. Tax revenue has been greatly reduced because of the lockdown response to the virus, and there is no way to predict if it will ever return to its previous level. There is also no way to predict if the NEEDS of the residents may change considerably after the virus has abated.
There are considerable funds in the general fund, but they should be reserved until there is better knowledge of what future needs may be – the city is always dealing with an aging infrastructure in our sewers, our roads, as well as changing traffic patterns.
To spend money on what some SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP want is irresponsible.

My concern is the process with Crane Architects. More bids should have happened before taking it to the Council.
I do not understand the rush nor the need to spend so much money on a building with so little parking space. Why not place the efforts on Stoneman. We are downgrading our recreation center and paying 5 million dollars.

Renovate! This building, which I remember well, is a very cool mid-century gem. Don’t leave our history in the dust; in a few short decades this property will be 100 years old...think about that, 100 years old!

San Marino Center DOES NOT need a $5 million facelift. The estimate went up 25% in 1 month. SM Center only brought in $8,000 in rental fees last year. There is ZERO return on investment. Tall Tale Talt is wrong in not looking at the return on spending $5 million taxpayer money. How about freezing city employee salaries and benefits for 5 years to re-coup the $5 million?

At this time, my only comment to your thoughtful perspective is to state my belief that the COMMUNITY should evaluate what the COMMUNITY needs—not the “city” nor City Club, SMUSD or the Chamber...

We shouldn't glamorize an outdated building that hasn't been maintained, and has no parking, with past memories. The city needs to evaluate what the community really needs and find the appropriate space and budget for that. Personally, I believe that space should be parking for the middle school and library. Before sinking over 5 million (pre construction estimate, which based on experience will grow) we should review all City building to see where our money should/could be better spent. Out Police Department building is seriously outdated - why don't we build a new safety center - which would provide a large enough space for City Council meeting (the current space will most likely no be usable for many years during and post Covid - and was too small before), PD and FD meetings and community outreach, and other City meetings. There is a large under utilized lot there and it is next to staff at City hall. We need a place to meet for city / community events - not parties.

I remember my grandmother was seemingly always running to a meeting held here when I was very young. I believe once was a fundraiser for some historical reason and another might have been.... I want to say it was a AVON meeting? I just always saw this place as a community space that my grandmother was linked with.
