In an effort to supposedly beautify downtown Salem, Oregon, two free speech kiosks were destroyed in the middle of the night along with dozens of flower stands. Anyone was allowed to post anything on the kiosks and when they were disappeared, many artists lost their voice. The mayor and City Council promised to replace the Free Speech Kiosks with new, better kiosks. They have yet to fulfill their promise. We encourage anyone anywhere to add their voice to our cause. We, the undersigned, believe in free speech and offering artists, performers and musicians an outlet to promote creativity and to this end, recommend the immediate replacement of kiosks in downtown Salem, Oregon. We will send this petition to Mayor Janet Taylor, the Salem City Council and Go Downtown Salem at the end of April 2009.

Updates

November 19, 2008

I have been walking past those empty sidewalk patches every day and the absence of our kiosks feels louder than ever. We are currently drafting formal letters to the City Council to hold them to the replacement promise they made to our creative community.

November 19, 2008

Seeing this level of support reminds me exactly why those empty spaces on the sidewalk feel like such a betrayal of our creative community. We are building real momentum toward holding the city to their word and getting our kiosks back.

Ridiculous that they tore them down in the dark like cowards. Salem used to be cool but now its just boring.
