Safe Winter Roads for St. Paul

I contacted the mayor’s office, the city council and my city council rep. about a week ago for the same problem. I am so glad you started this petition! I got a response from the mayor’s affice, and I understand the difficulties that the department faces, but it is nevertheless unacceptable to have to wait a minimum of 30 hrs. for the city to start plowing snow emergency routes and an additional 22 for them to finish plowing residential streets. Especially when there is usually plenty of warning from weather reports that more than 3” are expected. I believe most residents would be on the alert to move cars if a snow emergency is declared even at 5 or 6 pm and starts at 9. The last 3 years have not been good in this area. It used to be much better a few years ago.

I live on the east/west street that is the last to get plowed. Most of the time it's like it wasn't even plowed. All the streets plowed before us have pavement showing we have inches of snow on the street and still get stuck even after they have plowed. It is hard to deal with every time it snows for years.

We're on Leone Ave. I have gotten stuck trying to get in/out of my driveway because the street has not been plowed. I was in another city/state this weekend that had 8" of snow and within 24 hours all of the main streets and side streets and been plowed through at least once.

It’s ridiculous that we have to wait up to 2 days to get plowed out. Even after plowing, we still get stuck at all of the cross streets because of snow.

I want the head of St. Paul Public works in charge of plows to live on our block and have to travel up and down Montreal multiple times a day between Hamilton & West 7th. The last snowfall there was a semi truck, USPS van m, metro bus and several residents stuck trying to get up the hill!! It’s unacceptable. We’ve only had the plow on our street 3 times all winter!!

I live in the midway area and my biggest gripe is they say no parking until streets are plowed curb to curb, but the plow drivers seem to think the curbs are 1 &1/2 to two feet out from the curb making it difficult to get one car through the streets. they also leave such a hugh pile of snow at the end of alleyways it would be tough for emergency vehicles to get into the alleys in the event of an emergency.

I live in the Summit Hill neighborhood. Our side streets get one pass, a couple days after the storm. The snow gets plenty of time to be packed down and the plow does little to help. Our streets are atrocious.

I am a school bus driver, in the Woodbury/ Cottage Grove area, where both the arterial and neighborhood side streets are plowed, curb to curb, within 24 hours of snowfall. All I can say is thank heaven I do not have to drive a bus in St Paul!

Taxes go up every year and every year plowing has gotten worse in the 10 years I've lived in St. Paul. With not plowing after 3" of snowfall, I've gotten stuck multiple times on my block and have missed work because of it. Every other city seems to be able to clear the roads and residential streets well. I don't want an increase in taxes, I want our taxes used appropriately and effectively.

I am a St. Kate's student, and I live in St. Paul near the corner of Watson and Cleveland. I have had nights where I have not only gotten my car stuck, but had to help get 2 others unstuck on the same road. If plowing is done as frequently as it should be, this would not be the case.

I live on Suburban Ave and can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten stuck at the ends of my street, middle of my street or had to help others with the same problem. Most people around here know to keep their bins up on their lawn or up further in their driveways so they can plow to the curb and I’ve watched plows go purposely closer on to peoples driveways and curbs to knock over trash/recycling bins. What kind of jerks get a kick out of that? Shame on you. After the first snow our street is ruined for the entire winter. Every year for the 20 years I’ve lived here.

I agree that If there is a snowfall of 3+ inches that ends before 5 p.m. on a given day, I want plows out during the overnight hours of that same 24-hour period (not 30+ hours later as is the current structure). I live on a night plow that doesn't get plowed for 2 days and I have gotten stuck. Although my alley is plowed, I get stuck turning into it also because the side streets are not plowed. Each year taxes go up, yet the plowing gets worse.

I think the plows need to be out plowing during the snow especially on the side streets. Makes it so hard to walk to bus stops when the roads aren't plowed. Or when they wait a really long time to plow the roads and the snow is already compacted down and can't drive through it.

I couldn't get my car further than the end of my driveway last Tuesday because St. Paul did not plow after Sunday's all-day snowfall, waiting instead until Wednesday to plow, after another 4 or so inches had fallen on Monday. I had to miss a day of work!! This is unconscionable St. Paul. You owe me and you owe my employer.

Dangerous icy conditions on all of my neighborhood side streets, cannot meet cars, even SnellIng Ave. is so bad in the Midway area you cannot use the right lane safely. It is getting worse every year and I have been here for 25 years.

These road conditions are deplorable. Shame on you St. Paul.

It would be nice to see the roads plowed. Many people do not move their cars for plows to come through, when they do plow. The real reason cities don't tow cars much anymore is because it is a vote. City councils don't like to enforce city codes that might anger potential voters. Believe me, I've seen it happen many times. I work for the city.
