Safe Winter Roads for St. Paul

Today is the day of the “big snow”, Feb 20. I am concerned, however, by the previous snow and lack of plowing thereof. At the intersection of Holly and Mackubin, there has been several inches of snow in the intersection for days, on top of a sheet of glare ice! I have helped push cars out of this mess, have slipped numerous times on the treacherous ice under the snow, and watched cars slide through the intersection. It is only luck that a coIllusion has not occurred. In this instance, my guess would be that the lack of plowing meant also no salt/sand treatment of the intersection. Residents, drivers and pediatrians ALL deserve better!

I know that Saint Paul works hard to remove snow during the winter, but I agree with this petition's stance that we can do even better. I think that more resources used at the beginning of a snow event can in some cases alleviate the burden on residents and our city as storms progress, particularly with multiple storms back-to-back. In the interest of both driver and pedestrian safety, this should be improved.

For safety, please declare a snow emergency in a timely manner. Please do not wait until it is done snowing if threshold is met. Also, please plow even if more snow is coming in a day or two. Waiting creates icy and unsafe conditions.

My east-west street isn’t plowed until the second day after a snow emergency. Cars get stuck, and the snow compacts to an icy layer that remains after the plows come, leaving dangerous driving and walking and slick dangerous intersections.

By the time they declare the snow emergency and actually get out there it can be over 24 to 36 hours after the snow ended. The streets end up with 4-6 inches of compacted snow the plows cannot get to creating horrible driving conditions for 4 months!!!!

I live in Cottages of Hillcrest apartments. The roads during & after a snowstorm are terrible in my area. It is all but impossible for people & vehicles to get around. If you need an emergency vehicle, good luck with that. It takes at least 3 days, if not longer to be able to get around halfways decently.

I'd like to see plows out on non busy streets when there is a decent amount of snow. If we see fit to plow the busy streets then there's enough snow to plow all the streets. Each time it snows just under what a snow emergency total is called for the snow just sits and adds up. How can I move my car when you do you call one if there's already 5 inches of snow from past storms?

They do a poor job of plowing in the cathedral hill area also. They do not ticket and tow, and then it takes several days for them to plow after the landlord calls and complains. This is now how the process shoudl work.

my street is NEVER plowed until about 5pm the DAY AFTER a “ major snow event”. I pay taxes, this is NOT accaptable. I have missed countless days of work. How is it ok for it to snow 3 inches one day, then 2 days later snow abother 3.5 inches and still snow emer. is not declared?! My street has been plowed by the city approx 3 times this ENTIRE. winter. NOT acceptable. Cars are always stuck. It is pure ice too because of the LACK of plowing by the City of St Paul. Noth to mention when they do plow the “ busy” streets, for example Lexington, the plows leave huge piles of snow which make it impossible to even turn down my own street!!! I also have a alley, detached garage ( lucky me) and the city wont touch the alley!!!!! Take a note from Mpls- plow our alley!!! We cant even use our garages, take our trash out, etc. and god forbid and Emer. vehicle needed to drive down the alley. We all pay an alley right of way tax and maintenace every single year. Maintain the alleys and the streets. It is not acceptable . It’s 2019, how many more years until STP figures this problem out?

When my car gets stuck at an intersection of Goodrich, Fairmount, Osceola, I start to cry. I'm not strong enough to dig myself out, so I sit and wait for some kind soul to help me out. It is distressing and discouraging. Ridiculous! We're better than this. I'd like for once to tell my coworkers who live in the suburbs that our streets are clear too.

We need quicker snow plowing so buses can get our kids to school.

Yes! Please do a better job at plowing the snow on saint paul roads! This is ridiculous!

I grew up here and have to say the plowing in this city has reached a new all time low. Last year the first plowing on my street left snow piled up 3' from the curb line on both sides of the street. This year it was, and remains, 2.5' from the curb on both sides. That is 5' to 6' feet of road width reduction in the first storms. When cars are parked on both street sides it can be challenging to navigate a car through the street, not to mention an emergency vehicle(s). I can't wait to see the inadequacy with this new set of storms. The city needs to finally correct this instead of simply raising the charges for service we are not receiving. It is time to change this.

Rice street being one of the last to be plowed is -not- good decision making. We need change.

My commutes to and from work are typically harrowing in the snowy times, although safe. It's a real disappointment to get home to St. Paul, only to get stuck in the last few blocks of a 50+ minute commute (on a good day) due to improperly maintained side streets. By the time a snow emergency is declared, I'll be hard-pressed to free my little VW from the accumulated snow and ice before the morning plow comes, let alone make it through the snow-filled intersections. Please make some changes, so I no longer see school busses stuck at intersections and layers of ice under inches of compacted snow. St. Paul is more than just a few glamorous main drags to entice commerce, there are a lot of residents struggling. If not for the community spirit of helpful neighbors armed with shovels and strong backs, I don't think many of us would be able to free our vehicles. Let's see snow emergencies called in a more timely manner, let's see some salt on the side streets, and let's make it a little safer for our friends, families and neighbors. Please!

This is awful this city refuses to work on what the residents consider to be important; streets, crime, taxes, garbage disposal....why do we put up with this mayor and council?
