Freedom of speech is one thing, but this is so much more than that. It’s got to stop. Please.

They are not allowed to single out individuals for vicious threats.

Southern Miss should be more protective of their students and prospective students. These young people should be your first concern!

I would like to petition for the university of southern Mississippi to have a safe space for the shoemaker square located on the campus.

Graduating from USM was one of the most rewarding moments of my life. However, graduating would not have been nearly as wonderful without the rewarding experiences that led me to that moment. I grew as a person and scholar thanks to USM’s dedication to my overall success. This is the type of nurturing, challenging environment I want other students to experience. Yet, the hate that had come to campus in recent years has only made that difficult. I remember walking near the fountain hoping it wasn’t a day that hateful group would show up. In fact, there were days I avoided the fountain altogether and took a different path to class because I didn’t want to deal with any possible intolerance from hateful people. Eventually, I had to stop doing that because I found the quickest way to class was the path pass the fountain and I realized avoiding the issue wouldn’t make t stop. These were people who spent their time on campus humiliating (trying to at least) students into agreeing with them and it was repulsive to say the least. As a gay man, not only did I feel uncomfortable being around them but unsafe as well. The homophobic signs (and overall tendencies) they displayed made me wonder how far they were willing to go with their hate speech. For the first time since I started my time at USM, I started feeling unsafe. This is more than just someone being hurt by hateful messages, this is about the safety of the student body. When any student feels unsafe at USM because of the influences from outside organizations, then the school must take a a stand for those students. After all, without the students the school is just abandoned campus, looking pretty but fairly meaningless in the long run.

If I could remove these protesters from my campus, I would. At least I can try to help here instead.

They need to stop. It is not “peacefully protesting” they are screaming at people who pass by and sending the wrong message.

I am tired of feeling uncomfortable walking through the area.

I agree that the fountain should be a place where people promote things that are positive and beneficial to the school or community. The protests are ridiculous and though it's ok to promote one's own beliefs, it shouldn't be done in a way that is harmful, aggressive, or negative to others. Having to walk past that fountain only to here those rednecks spout their spiteful rhetoric really dampens the mood on campus.

This religious group gives a bad name for Christian and they always bring down students here at usm. Everytime I see them, I get so angry because they usually try to point me out since we have had issues in the past.

Everyone has the right to express themselves, but sometimes expressions are uncalled for and just down right disrespectful.

They need to learn the difference between harassment and free speech somewhere else than in the middle of our campus
