On April 20, 1999, 13 students were killed by two teens that walked in Columbine High School. These students were killed at approximately 11:19 AM. When students go to school each day, they should feel as if they are in a safe environment. Each day, the average student does not wake up thinking if he or she is going to be in danger at school, and the 13 victims at Columbine High School did not wake up knowing it was their last day to live.

According to Wikipedia, there have been over 133 shootings since the Columbine tragedy. Although shootings are very spontaneous and random, the seriousness of the problem should be addressed. You never know when a school shooting will occur. Since school shootings are becoming more common and becoming a global trend, schools around the nation need to take action by adding more security to make students feel safer at their school. Adding security enhancements such as scanners and metal detectors will prepare the schools for any circumstance.

Our goal is to eliminate the risk of school shootings completely. To do this, all schools should have certain security enhancements to meet the needs of the problem. In order for this to happen, we want to promote awareness to every student in Moore and Norman about school safety. School should be a safe and welcoming environment and although no shootings have occurred in Moore or Norman, we want to make sure every student aware that a school shooting can easily happen to any school. If students are aware and begin to feel passionate about safety, they will rise up to administration and let them know how they feel about safety at school. One voice can turn to one hundred voices and then administrators will take us more seriously and add needed security if the problem of a shooting were to arise. We hope in the future to have all schools equipped with door-scanners, metal detectors, and police officers at each entrance door. Safety should be a top priority in all schools around the nation to ensure that student’s feel safe coming to school. By promoting school safety, schools will start adding security enhancements. This will benefit the schools by providing a safer environment for everyone including staff and visitors. We hope by adding new security precautions; it will eliminate the possibility of another shooting.
