We, the citizens of Irving, urge the Irving City Council to promptly establish a “Complete Streets” Policy.

This would ensure that all roadway projects in Irving are designed and constructed to safely accommodate all users: pedestrians, cyclists, transit-users, and motorists.

City Council should establish a Complete Streets Policy because we currently have no written policy which states that roads should safely and comfortably accommodate cyclists and pedestrians. We must provide a high Level of Service for users of all ages and abilities, especially children commuting to and from school by foot or bicycle.

We ask the City Council to do this promptly before there are more deaths and injuries due to the lack of infrastructure. Roads are dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians and a Complete Streets Policy has been shown to make roads safer for them as well as motorists. Doing so now is the most cost-effective use of our tax dollars. Many of our roads are in the process of being (or will soon be) rebuilt or improved, and costs at this stage are relatively minor.

We, the undersigned, petition the Irving City Council to adopt a Complete Streets Policy, and to implement the necessary corresponding programs, including a Master Bike Plan.
