It is with great disappointment that I let you all know we have been unsuccessful in our attempts to be heard as a community. Motion 88 - allowing for rezoning of land adjacent to LETNS for community purposes has been defeated - and SDCC plan to construct 25 residential units on the site. Additionally, we have been advised that there is no funding available for traffic calming measures outside the school. I would like to thank all who have shared their views and their support through this process - and I urge residents in particular to continue proactively lobbying their Councillors ... as a school, we have no jurisdiction outside the school gate, and therefore, as residents, your voices are stronger than ours ... it is our fervent hope that the problem can still find it's solution .... thank you ... :)

The safety of a proper drop off zone adjacent the LETNS is invaluable. SDCC need to consider if they agree with this or whether they are more motivated by a monetary value linked to a development site ? Time to make amendments for previous planning shortcomings.

Common sense needs to prevail, think before you park or drop off what the consequences of your action or in-action is to the school kids, parents and residents. In particular some very dangerous driving by parents reversing onto the pedestrian crossing (seriously, what are you thinking about!!). There needs to be a drop off point by removing part of the grass verge allowing for at least 7-10 cars drop off at the same time.

It is very difficult to park beside the school and is becoming more dangerous for the kids going in to the school as parents are getting frustrated with the current situation.

Kate,
Thank you so much for supporting the petition and for sharing your thoughts ... Please contact your local representatives who are tabling motions with SDCC on behalf of parents of the school and residents alike. Additionally, the Garda Siochana are very supportive, and will ticket illegally parked vehicles, and patrol the area... We speak with them regularly, and are hopeful that they will be a more visible presence in the area.... We are holding a Public Meeting at the school on June 8th @ 7.30pm - flyers will be distributed tomorrow. Please come along - your public representatives will be there, and you can at least make your concerns known directly to those in a position to make a difference. Thanks again for your input! Niambh

I understand it's frustrating for parents with limited parking around the school but I, as a resident am at my wits' end. First issue is cars parked both sides of the road at the entrance to the estate - no emergency vehicle has room to pass and there is double yellow lines on one side which are blatantly being ignored! It's the residents of Mount Bellew who will suffer is someone needs an ambulance or fire brigade urgently.
Second issue is the way in which vehicles are parked - pure abandonment! On corners and dangerous bends which is causing obstruction and blocking motorists view. Extremely dangerous and will cause an accident!!
Third issue is the driving! It's appalling! Stopping in the middle of the road to drop kids off! So kids are getting out of the cars in the middle of the road, on their own and running across the road to the school! This is so irresponsible on the parents part! Mind you kids! Because there will be a child knock down and it will be the motorists fault of course!
Fourth issue is parking outside residents houses. I finish work at 2pm so coming home and having to park up the road and around the corner. Those spaces are allocated to the houses. It's our driveway! This is annoying but I can deal with and have done for the past 7 years because I know it's frustrating for parents. BUT my one issue with this is... Kids getting in and out banging the doors off my car. My car is ruined with dents and scrapes from car doors! And it's not just the kids it's the parents doing it too.
All these issues are caused by disrespect and are irresponsible. Yes I understand parents have a difficult task dropping kids to and from school but what these parents are forgetting is Mount Bellew is not just where their kids school is. People live here! This is someone's home!!

Allowing the planning of a large primary school combined with a housing estate all entering and exiting onto what is basically a lane is bad planning at its finest.Proper provision for parking and most importantly ambulance/fire brigade access should have been initiated from the outset.I have witnessed a fire brigade trying to get up that narrow stretch of road at school finish time and there was absolute panic. Not only is it hazardous for children it is also very unfair on the residents of Mount Bellew.Newer schools built since have parking provision so clearly there have been some lessons learned.

Safe parking facilities are needed for the safety of each and every child. It's currently a free-for-all - something has to be done
