The sacking of a scientist at the University of Copenhagen threatens freedom of research

This case, seen in terms of its legal regional context, reveals to me once more and very clearly the urgency of a converging, ethically sound, interdisciplinary approach to the exponentally increasing complexity of a transparent and fruitful cooperation between science and politics (scientists and policymakers)

The official reasons presented for the dismissal of Prof. Hans Thybo are neither substantiated nor sufficient. Wolfgang Franke Full professor of geology (retired; universities of Giessen and Frankfurt), past President of the Geologische Vereinigung, member of the European Academy of Sciences and member and past chairman of the geology, mineralogy and crystallography section of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina).

The grounds cited are trivial and certainly do not justify dismissal - if there are more serious factors behind this action they should be stated.

The university action against Professor Thybo, outstanding scientist and widely respected colleague, is unreasonable and untenable. It should be reversed without delay.

unacceptable decision on so weak grounds

The firing of Prof. Thybo is a measure totally incommensurate and appears frightening to me and reminds me of measures used in autocratic countries like Turkey.

These seem to be very weak reasons for such actions and makes one wonder if there are other undisclosed reason. If so, they should be made public.

I had a very high opinion of Danish educational system, but the firing of Hans Thybo on such a trivial excuse has shattered my all my imagination. I have seen many universities sinking due to such action and hope UC would take appropriate action avoid such a down fall, and hold on to high position it holds at the moment.

Outrageous!! University of Copenhagen should focus on getting to the World Cup top twenty of global universities. The current position is a disgrace to Denmark. Poor management is the only explanation as excellently illustrated by this case. I worked 8 years at University of Copenhagen. A education factory of low quality. If the West has a "holy value" - it is freedom of speech - Any attack on freedom of speech is an attach on the western civilization...

I am shocked and deeply worried to learn what happened to Professor Hans Thybo. I know him from many years of fruitful cooperation in research in Europe. This is a brutal attack on academic freedom. Prof. Thybo should be reinstalled or the real reasons should be made public. Should he not be reinstalled by the University of Copenhagen, the Danish Government should intervene to prevent further damage to a worldwide-known scientist and to the University of Copenhagen. I strongly support the petition.

I am alarmed by this dismissal, and what it means for academic freedom. Unless the university administration itself takes appropriate corrective action, I think it will be essential for the Danish government to step in to make sure that Danish Academia operates by internationally accepted standards of academic freedom.
