Reinstate Dr. Alamgir!

While I am sympathetic to Alamgir’s situation, I would like to bring attention to the fact that in order to apply to a residency position at Robert Wood Johnson, the policy clearly states that, “A graduate of a foreign medical school must … be either a US citizen, US permanent resident or holder of a J-1 exchange visa issued by the ECFMG.” This policy can be found at http://rwjms.rutgers.edu/education/gme/housestaff.html Despite what The Rutgers Global International Faculty, Scholar and Student Adviser stated regarding her H-1B visa, the GME office policy is very clear. If I was in Dr. Alamgir’s position, I would have worked very hard to reconcile any documentation permitting me to work under an H-1B visa and the GME policy regarding J-1 visas. Especially considering that with a J-1 visa, after her residency, she would be required to return to her home country for 2 years. Also does it not strike any of the other residents and fellows as odd, that Dr. Alamgir “turned down other programs to take a job with Rutgers”? Was her residency position offered outside of the Match? Did she scramble into this position? I wish I was afforded the opportunity to choose where I did my residency instead of having to go through the Match. If Dr. Alamgir truly wants to work under a H-1B visa, instead of a J-1 (which would allow her to stay in the United States after her residency to practice dermatology, instead of having to return to her home country for 2 years), she could break her lease agreement with her landlord (likely lose her security deposit and maybe pay a penalty), and find another residency program that will allow her to work under an H-1B visa; it may not be dermatology, but hey, at least you get to stay in the United States. Also I would like to point out that, at least on my pay stub I have $43.43 automatically deducted from my biweekly paycheck. That is $1,042.32 per year. Over

Dr Alamgir is a wonderful physician! She is caring and knowledgeable and a wonderful colleague!

This is unfair and absurd. Rutgers should reinstate her or pay her one year’s salary because she could be working elsewhere.

Shameful - if H1B status was going to be an issue a long-established medical center should have been able to see it coming. Sponsor or subsidize her stay here, RWJ!

This is unacceptable and unprofessional. No one should be misleaded like this.

I hope you will re-consider reinstating Dr. Alamgir. This is really unjust to cancel her contract. I hope the program will make the ethical and right decision and reinstate her. She had worked hard all her life to be where she is now and it is so wrong for some one to tear it down in seconds. Please walk in her shoes and feel how devastating it must be.

Absurd! If the tables were turned and a physician terminated a contract with no prior notice nor real reason, there would be consequences.

This is just another example of how Rutgers does not take into consideration the effort and commitment that residents and fellows make when we go into training. Please reinstate Dr. Alamgir!
