20+ yrs we have been jumping hoops of the politics of a money driven licensure that doesn’t promote our profession to grow like others. If one can perform life saving skills in one state, why should they be held back from doing it 20 miles in the other direction. The “R” in RN, stands for the same in “RRT”.. cut the ties!

I want to practice Respiratory Care and help patients everywhere. I currently have 4 state licenses. It gets more costly every time I acquire a new license. Each state requires an application fee along with the license fee, ranging from $40-$300 (state dependent). All states charge a fee to verify your state license and every application in a new state requires you to have all other state licenses verified at a cost of $20-$30 per verification. They also all require the NBRC to verify my credential for a separate fee each time. Finally, each and every state license application requires me to get fingerprinted and submit for a criminal background check and pay for all associated costs ranging from $15-$65. The local sheriff's department probably knows what I want before I even ask. Then there is the license renewal cost for each and every state. This has become an undue hardship placed on respiratory therapists by the state legislatures across the country. We just want to work where we are needed!

If the pandemic has shown anything it has shown the need for a compact license to allow us to go where the biggest need is without the hassle or delay.

I support this petition. Many RTs are saving lives wherever the COVID hotspots pop up. RTs cross state lines because there’s a workforce shortage in that particular state. It’s not getting any better and a respiratory therapy license compact would be good for healthcare.
