RPI Allow Rush and Recruitment!

I’m not Greek affiliated but all of my best friends are. I know how this will effect life at RPI as a whole. The actions of some are not reflective of the whole community, I hope they reconsider this harsh action.

Although I’m transferring from RPI, I don’t want to see my fraternity and other Greek Organizations die off because Shirley is jealous that alumni donate more to the organizations than her.

This is unacceptable.

RPI is one of the hardest schools in the country and Greek life was my support system. Canceling rush denies that support system to other students that may be struggling. I have seen closeted freshmen open up into responsible adults thanks to the influence of my fraternity, and I think that suppressing fraternities will be deleterious to the quality of graduates this school produces.

Class of 2008. This is a ridiculous show of authoritarianism.

Greek life was an important part of my student experience at RPI. If the greek system had not been in place, I would have attended another university.

Greek Life at RPI meant a lot to me when I was there and is what keeps me connected to RPI as an alumnus. This is definitely an overreaction on the part of the administration to a bad few and will cause severe financial problems for chapters across campus if they can't recruit.

Let new and returning students have the opportunity to have as wonderful and powerful of an experience as the rest of us were allowed!

I would have NEVER attended RPI if there was no Greek Life on campus. My family has two generations of RPI graduates - on both sides - and all four of us participated in Greek Life. Ever hear, “Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face” ??? Don’t be surprised if applications, and benefactors, dwindle.

My Greek Life family saved me when the RPI counseling center and administration wrote me off as an overtired perfectionist. I would not be here today if not for Greek Life. A task force may be necessary to minimize risk and mitigate problems but they should work with the Greek organizations and ensure houses have strong mentorship from each National headquarters and/or Alumni board. RPI needs to be harsher on individuals and organizations with repeat offences, Greek or unaffiliated. I urge RPI administration to remain involved with and foster a good relationship with Greek Life as well as student life. Suspending Greek Life will result in underground organizations and more dangerous risks. As an alumnus, I will no longer donate to RPI if the administration continues to blanket suspend or ban, or stifle Greek Life. This will not end sexual assaults or alcohol and drug related issues on RPIs campus, only temporarily quiet the more blatant cases.

RPI ‘88 AGD

As a founding member of AGD, this action is upsetting. Being a female at a predominantly male school, having AGD sisters made the college experience so much richer. As a alum of the college, my donations will stop and I will recommend others cease their donations if Greek life is diminished at the school. This is too drastic of a measure. The impact of the bans on alcohol should be evaluated first.

Greek life provided not only the family and support aspect needed to succeed in a challenging college, but also was the reason I stayed at RPI. Without Greek life, RPI will crumble. Greek life, in my opinion, actually helps to prevent irresponsible drinking and actions, as houses hold members personally responsible for behavior that is does not meet their standards of conduct. The fear of getting suspended or even kicked out of your greek house keeps you in line. Removing that aspect will only make situations worse. What needs to happen is campus wide in person training. We have harassment and code of conduct training in the work place, why would this not exist in college? Especially when young adults are on their own for the first time and dont know how to handle situations yet? For current Greek houses, the alcohol ban is not an issue. Preventing fall recruitment will be devastating to some houses, and will put an end to others. The lack of new members may also cause houses to fall into financial trouble, as new membership fees constitute a large portion of a houses' budget.

I attribute much of the success that I had in school and in life to the great support network and role models that I found in my Sorority.

This policy is so disappointing. It will dismantle the Greek system at RPI which I feel is something of a treasure at ROI. While academics is the primary reason for attending college, fraternities provide a home away from home, emotional support, and social activities to enhance personal growth. I know my husband would not have graduated if it wasn’t for the help and support if his fraternity brothers. Again this policy is going to be detrimental to the overall acedemuc experince at RPI.

Being in a Greek organization gave me more real world experience than any class did at RPI. I love RPI, but cannot support this decision to halt Greek recruitment.

Greek life at RPI has been one of the most positive experiences that I have had since coming to RPI, and being a part of it has helped me grow both as a student and a person. Given the events of the previous semester, I understand the desire to take action against Greek life, but I firmly believe that this is the wrong way to do it. Banning rush will hurt all fraternities, but it will also hurt the student body as a whole, denying them access to a large part of the community at RPI. I get that there have been fraternities that are breaking the rules, and I can understanding wanting to punish them, but the solution to that is not to dismantle a system that almost a third of the student body is involved in. If reform is needed, this is not the way to do it. I strongly believe that new students should have the opportunity to become involved in Greek life and experience all of the benefits that it has to offer.

Greek life was an integral part of my time at RPI and has continued to help me succeed in my professional life. Banning rush and recruitment is unacceptable.
