It is time for Royalton-Hartland Elementary to create a district-wide recess policy. Students are in need of a mandatory unstructured break each day.
Why is recess important?
Recess must be viewed by educators and education administrators as a valuable and essential learning time for children. Research has proven what we’ve also known for years: children NEED recess to develop social skills, hone problem-solving skills, explore their own ideas, re-charge their minds after periods of structured activity, and simply exercise.
Furthermore, research has shown that adequate recess time actually improves student behavior and academic goals. Children who have recess are better able to manage their behavior and focus on learning in the classroom.
Why do we need a district-wide policy?
A district-wide policy:
Communicates and affirms the importance of recess time to the academic, social, emotional, behavioral and physical well-being of children.
Recognizes appropriate child development practice as it relates to learning styles and needs of a wide-range of children.
Protects this essential respite time from cuts for additional instruction or as a disciplinary measure.
Ensures recess equality across the school system. In recent years, low-income schools have had the lowest levels of recess time. This is not acceptable.
Develops a framework for school administrators to follow in implementing successful recess at their school.
PLEASE TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO ENSURE THAT ROYALTON-HARTLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN HAVE ADEQUATE RECESS!

The momentum behind this push for a district-wide recess policy is undeniable. Now is the time to turn this energy into action by emailing your school board representative and demanding a meeting on the issue.

One of the reasons many families in this district are choosing to home school is due to the district's lack of physical activity and time spent outdoors using imaginative play. Playing outside is serious business mentally, socially and academically!
These kids work so hard they need to take a break don't you see everyone else take breaks
Recess is so vital for development especially in young children. When we take some away that as vital as this, it causes challenges down the road.
Kids need large muscle play that recess provides to be better students! And teachers need it too!

My son comes home stressed out because he sits at a desk all day. They are just kids they need to run around and breathe some fresh air!
