We all know the real reason they are doing this the news tells about maybe 10 percent of what's going on that's the way they want it this place is a horrific hell hole and everybody knows it you can be mr. Positive all you want doesn't change reality.

I'm a former newspaper reporter living in Winnebago county. I find it appalling that the police department is considering scanner encryption. Never once did I hear of a criminal escaping capture by listening to a police scanner, but I can tell you that in an emergency like floods or severe weather, news media HAVE to be able to monitor scanners to be able to keep the public informed. Are you prepared to dedicate several officers to full-time communication to the press in event of a major emergency? Citizens have a right to know what their taxpayer-financed first responders are doing, as well as the locations of incidents so they can avoid them, and to be aware of dangerous situations in their neighborhoods. Please do NOT encrypt police channels.

I think it is a communities right to know what is going on. Before social media we heard about stuff on the 5pm and 6pm news and didn't get half of what was going on in this town. I think the crime has always been very high, it's just out in the open now. By allowing citizens to hear and read what is going on helps us to protect our families and our communities. I don't know about you, but if I hear of a house or car broken into, I'm sure going to let my neighbors know to be on the look out.

I live on the west side of Rockford, I need to stay current on what's going on around me, it's not fair to the good abiding citizens of our county because we won't be completely informed of everything going on around us. There have been many times I've seen something, listened to it in the scanner and watched the news to never hear a thing about it...

The citizens of Rockford need to have transparency. This is one of the tools we have to find out where crime is happening in "real time". The media is too late to warn us and is not a good way of communicating crime. I have absolutely no confidence in the Rockford Police.

I think its important for we citizens to know what is going on around us. If the police have some sort of private bust that they dont want public, they should be able to use a private channel. I dont see why they want to keep it from the public unless they have something to hide?
