This unedited scanner feed gives us a pretty good idea of what is really going on and allows for residents to the ability to keep their families safe and informed. Going 100% encrypted will take this away.

The Rockford Police Dept. has a solid reputation as a highly professional law enforcement agency with great leadership. It would only seem fitting to see them demonstrate this to the public in every way possible by taking the lead as forerunners in transparency as it is thrust into the national spotlight. It takes a forward thinking administration to explore trends in policing & see beyond the obvious, setting high standards in professionalism & real time disclosure. While there certainly may be some benefits derived from limited encryption application during surveillance & certain tactical situations, the recent broad over use of the technology can be linked to Motorola's interest in its profitability, as conveyed to me recently by one of their former executives. Former Police Chief & President of the Police Foundation JIm Bueermann expressed it best when he commented that there are many secure ways for officers to communicate when needed & that the advantages of keeping the partnership between the people & the police strong far out weigh any perceived benefits or false sense of security offered by encryption. In a recent article he noted the importance of encouraging citizens to feel informed & connected in regard to the policing of their community because of the cooperation & trust that it builds. Bueermann is a strong proponent of keeping routine dispatch channels in the clear. I have confidence in Rockford to explore all options in policing & to select those that demonstrate their ability to serve their residents with pride & the highest level of accountability.

Police are supposed to protect and serve. The people pay their salaries. The people are who require their service. The people deserve to know what is happening in their community.

This is better than the newspaper. I also like the most wanted posters. Keep it open.

Public awareness helps us to stay out of the way when police are doing their job. Avoid accident scenes, standoff situations in the neighborhood, gas leaks, wreck less drivers. It also helps us appreciate our local police officers by reminding us all they do. Please do not encrypt police radio.

Some of us women use the resources to keep us safe, by staying clear of where crime is occurring at the moment. We do not want to be a 'victim in waiting.'

This information is our right as citizens to protect our self from known crime activity in our neighborhood and town. Rockford has tried for years to keep us in the dark. Thats why we are now learning just how unsafe we are. The criminals will always find a way to do bad and out smart the police but that wont stop crime. Citizens need to be protected and their saftey should be put 1st.

Do not encrypt the scanner traffic. You don't want the public to know what going on and that's wrong RPD. and Mayor.

I really have felt safe with listening to Rockford Scanner. I just can't see our criminals running around shooting off guns, robbing our establishments, breaking into homes, with their scanners on! It's our right to be able to know what is happening as its happening in our own city!

This is how the community stays in tune with all recent activity. It is a great knowledgeable source for the citizens of this city. It would be a shame to disallow them to serve the public.
