While I absolutely support this proposition, and have done so actively for over 15 years, its important that everyone knows that its not a central or local government issue: the barrier to upgrading J-mall is solely the investment priorities of its commercial owner, Stride Ltd. This outfit is a profit-oriented commercial property investor; they care not at all for our community, and make investment decisions purely on a commercial baisis.
Appealing to their community spirit has been tried - unsucessfully - for decades. Only commercial necessity can make them commit $300 million to upgrade the mall, when they continue to extract rents as high or higher than Wellington CBD rentals for dilapidated Johnsonville mall shops.
I concluded many years ago that the only community action likely to succeed here is rather strong and very vocal community opposition to not only shopping at J mall, but also to actively boycotting all branches of any chains that use J mall or any other Stride propertied. Thats very harsh and unfair for small businesses who rent there, but this mall is many decades overdue for redevelopment, and only an utterly catastrophic slump in the rental value of the mall space would encourage Stride to make that investment.

Have been living in this area since the 90s and Johnsonville mall was where all the students and locals can get together and enjoy social time together. Please make the area vibrant again for our next generation and let them enjoy it as we did.
