Activity is needed for all students K-12. We need to step up the amount of time required in the High School. It will only help each community as these students graduate. They will have life skills that can keep them active.

The only way to hit this is at the elementary level, giving kids the joy of being physically active, the ability to express themselves physically. There are challenges, but it needs to be something that everyone is committed to and to commit the resources needed - equipment, facilities, qualified Physical educators, time, etc.

Good luck! We definitely need more time with our students. My students only get 40 minutes twice a week, which is basically cut in half because of roll call or the classes showing up late!!

Totally agreed.... the foundation of health is very necessary to develop and the best time is the school aged childrens... if the foundation is stong then future will be bright and children will get knowledge , how to remain free from Hypokinetic diseases.

Every child need PE and recreation, we are in a computerized and very potentially lazy way of life now. Kids look for the easy way out which are videos and iPods/ipads, etc.... Get off you behinds and get that heart rate up and play for fun!

As a physical educator, it kills me to see as many kids not inspired to be active as there are. This action MUST be taken!

Diane,
I see you thinking, which is why it must be mandatory. Schools obviously will willingly spend money on Physical Education. However, I think with required PE time, they could come up with the money. I also think that the government could help as well. After all, they can pay now, or pay later. Obesity related problems cost us around 210 billion dollars a year and is only getting worse. I think that schools would need to prioritize their funds, but I don't think we can afford to not educator our students in fitness and nutrition.
Bottom line, you're right, it is a hurdle, but without state mandate, it will NEVER happen. :(

Doug, I agree with this mandate, however I don't think it will work if sufficient funding is not provided.
