Just a reminder that there *aren’t* “high schools all over the world”, and they have not existed centuries. But it’s just a ceremony; I went to school out east and stoles were not a big deal. Student achievement goes beyond a tassel; whether they have one or not, they’ve all achieved graduating. (And mang achievements go unrecognized as it is. Just because someone doesn’t earn honors doesn’t mean they don’t have ambition; they might have worked hard at a job or taking care of a family member.) Just wanted to remind us that in the grand scheme, it’s a brief ceremony; with or without symbols, life is long, graduating is the beginning of kicking off what they will all achieve. Caps off to them all.

Flawed and silly logic. You can't hide achievements and distinction in the hopes of not hurting the feelings of students who didn't achieve the same results (For whatever reasons) That's life in the real world - quit pandering to the presumed feelings and go about finding ways to make as many students as possible aim as high as they can. The students aren't stupid - you think they feel better knowing there is a special ceremony for the achievers and a not so special one for everyone???

The students who worked hard throughout high school shouldn’t be punished because their fellow classmates chose to not participate in clubs or sports.

It’s a guarantee that this policy will result in a disincentivized student body. Everyone can’t get a trophy so now nobody gets one. And if the problem is “the cord system is too out of control,” than pare it down and at a minimum recognize academic achievement. After all, isn’t that what school- at its very foundation- is for?? Education?

The way the stoles were previously given was a bad system, too. Not weighting classes and no class rank is crazy. The kids who did all on level classes with 4.0 GPA got higher honors than the students who took AP classes and had a 3.75. Bring back class rank and weighted GPA. Then honor the top 10%. Why is this so hard? Students in National Honor Society should be recognized with a stole with NHS embroidered on it. Honor the academic achievements. It is school, after all!

I graduated over 50 years ago where we all looked forward to having cords or honors for those who earned them. My daughters also had cords for both high school and college graduation. So why change tradition???? Be proud of the youths and their accomplishment.

This decision to ban honor cords is ridiculous. Students have worked hard & should be able to show their achievements. Plus future employers & colleges do not care about the achievements of the whole class, they care about individual achievement. This is just wrong!

My daughter is just entering the Issaquah school district as a 6th grader. If she chooses to do extra work and earns high grades, I hope she'll have the opportunity to be recognized for her accomplishments at graduation.
