I believe IHS is making a big mistake. Students who achieve a high degree of academic success should be recognized publicly in front of their peers in the same way we would recognize a child for excelling in sports and the arts. Please don’t take this recognition away from these students.

Issaquah High School constantly claims to be “preparing you for college” and “the real world” this is not how either of those work. I graduated from here 2 years ago and this is a complete slap in the face for all the extra hard work that was put in to earn these achievements. Those who go above and beyond deserve to be recognized at graduation. Super embarrassed to be an alumni of a school that puts this in place and has also taken away valedictorian.

As a parent of a student who will likely earn a cord or a stole, I think wearing these adornments on that day is a reminder to themselves of the work they put into their time there. They are personal expressions, and do not detract from the graduation experience of others. I support letting graduates wear the cords and stoles they have earned.

High School Graduates deserve the honors that they have earned for themselves. 13 years of education. Why would you take their honor cords? So everyone is pacified because they didn't work as hard? This is like a reverse participation trophy.
CORDS! HONORS! Success should be rewarded... Not just participation!!! Stop this nonsense.

When “everyone gets a trophy”, then it undermines those who worked hard to do more. It makes it ok to do the bare minimum. We do not want to live in a bare minimum world

Very good points. The cords and stoles are designed to acknowledge and recognize the hard work of students and is not designed to make others feel bad about themselves. The committee or school should not be taking on the responsibility of being the parent or parents.
