I agree and think it's a fair request. The students have made it clear that they are returning on January 7th. Teachers will show up but our classrooms will be practically empty.

My reasons: 1. The reality of the situation is: From January 2nd through January 4th 2019, our students will NOT attend school. They have determined that they will enjoy their Vacation one way or the other, which means that all Teachers will be forced to come to school and teach empty seats. For some professions, it is simply satisfying to come to work and get paid to do nothing. For Teachers, this is a waste of time and frustrating. We took the pledge to make a difference, we cannot make a difference when our students are not in attendance.
2. Teachers should not be punished for errors made by our School Board. They had ample time to respond and request an extension, however, the Students and Teachers are the recipients of the Punishment, not the School Boards. Also, it is not practical to adequately respond to vacation schedules three (3) years in advance because important information is sometimes lacking with reference to exams etc. More importantly most of the Teachers working now were not here 3 years ago.
3. The schedule violates our rights to enjoy our vacation the way it was intended: Fully. New Years is a day intended to spend fully with friends, families and loved ones, reconnecting bonds and relationships that were lost throughout the year. As Teachers, we are also expected to be Mentors, Parents, Guidance Counsellors, Referees, Psychologists, Role Models and Police Officers to our students for 364 days of the year (even when we are on vacation). We are asking to be Human Beings for one day that will ultimately require days to re-boost our battery to be fit and ready to work mentally for our students, who we give our all too. Many do not live to see a new year, we want to be able to celebrate it meaningfully.
