Restoring Safety and Vitality to Chapel Street

This is an urgent situation, the local community has the right to feel safe to venture from their homes without having to hide the eyes of their children from questionable happenings in the real world that would be R rated on a TV screen. We payed good money to live here , pay our rates and our taxes to live in an iconic prestigious suburb expecting that, in return , the local council and police will take care of these situations without us having to resort to begging by way of petition. On the flip side we called the council about this very situation, we were informed that the council cannot move on homeless people. Fair enough, I understand that the homeless are in challenging circumstances, but maybe the council should have a remedy in place for them. I’m sure this is not their first rodeo.

I'm a resident of 7 King St. I'm very much a live and let live person, and I understand I live in an area that gets a bit rowdy at times especially on the weekend. But this is out of hand. As residents, we should have a right to feel safe in the immediate surrounds of our building. I walk around the back streets often now to avoid them if I need to get to the supermarket or the train station etc - or if I just want to walk around the community I live in and love. I shouldn't have to do this. Many of us feel at least some degree of sympathy for the people causing this and their situation, I certainly do, but ignoring it is not acceptable. They need to be offered the health and social services assistance they require, and whether they accept it or not, moved on from their behaviour these past few weeks.

Agreed, I tend to stick to commercial rd and avoid chapel st where I can, it is an issue that’s needs assistance.

If we work together we can make Prahran Town Hall and the surrounding area a safe and thriving environment for residents, visitors, business owners and stakeholders.

Time to see efforts being put in to cleaning up Chapel St and surrounds. The area has declined rapidly the past 12 months but to see Prahran Town Hall in such a filthy state is beyond unacceptable. It is a health and safety risk to the wider community. Thank you.

I have had to change my daily walking route due the increased frequency of antisocial behaviour in Grattan Gardens, Prahran Square and outside the town hall. I am concerned for the safety of my dog and myself. Only last night did this group pictured have a fight, causing pools of blood and emergency services to attend outside town hall.

This has been an issue for YEARS now. Having managed a business in the area before covid I can attest to its affect on businesses. We should be able to work & live & shop without having to be abused by drunks

Hi council, I'm a resident of the local area near Prahran Town Hall. The people hanging out the front of the hall are causing a public nuisance and are a danger to the general public. They are constantly hanging out there, sometimes half naked and can be smelt from a few meters away. I have also seen the general public casually walk by, and then one of the people have gotten up to start following them down the street for a whole block and yelled at them. I have also seen one early morning one of them push a member of the public almost falling onto the street. Thankfully they were OK and was early morning so there was not a lot of traffic but it could have been a serious incident. These people need to be removed from the area and deterred. The lively hood of Prahran is deteriorating and with other inner suburbs being gentrified, Prahran is losing the high end reputation it used to have and this is a major cause of that.

My girlfriend lives in the apartment building opposite these scumbags and I'm just down the road, walking between our 2 homes doesn't feel safe thanks to these clowns

We need to feel safe to live around the area. Encountered multiple fights and loud blasting music even late at night.

Chapel street has become a cesspit of drug and alcohol fuelled crime and antisocial behaviour. It’s time the council stepped up and took decisive action.

We need more security!! Random groups taking the peace from a lot of businesses and residents

It’s a joke!!! They are making the area unlivable which is so unfair for the tenants. The council have to do something

So sad to see the decline of the vibrant shopping strip and the increase of filth and rubbish and violence. Not the Chapel St it once was sadly. Please make it a priority to return it to the safe place it always was.

City of stonnington need to restore pride in the Chapel St precinct. Do better!

It's horrendous and scary to walk passed. It also stink of their urine and other things around there.

I'm often afraid walking with my baby to get groceries and getting to appointments. We live right off chapel and our post box is constantly broken in to.
