Restoring Safety and Vitality to Chapel Street

I live nearby the townhall and daily passing by the group of these citizens. Absolutely agree with a petition

That needs to be adressed quickly as the atmosphere around Chapel is getting worse everyday

The date is 10th Jan 2024, just ask the police what happened there tonight at 645 pm on my walk home from work. It’s disgusting to even walk past the ‘town hall’ now.

It is now becoming scary to walk past the town hall without getting abused. Kept up until all hours from fights, screaming and loud music. The area smells like urine constantly. Completely disgraced they have not been arrested and told to leave after many complaints from residents. It’s now all day and night of the above To feel unsafe to leave your door by 50m should not be a thing. Enoughs enough

I work up on greville st and I am afraid to come out on my lunch breaks

Myself and partner live directly across from the town hall and have had many sleepless nights due to the loud music and disruptive behaviour, along with police sirens and presence in the last month. It has never been a particularly quiet area but it is not at a level where we are looking to move out of our apartment as it’s now unbearable.

I fully agreed with the petition. There has been disturbances : screaming, shouting, yelling obscene language, abusive and intimidating behaviours towards passer-bys, playing loud music until early hour of the morning no matter which night of the week. This unsocial behaviour of this group of people must be stopped .

Prahran does not feel safe anymore

Please help us feel safe in our neighbourhood again. I support the homeless, but not the violent behaviours that have been shown by the new town hall lurkers.

I've lived at 7 King Street for over 12 months. The noise I''m used to used, as the birds that have their home outside the town hall, and the usual idiots doing chap laps in their cars on Friday and Saturday night - and some night club noise. Nothing closing my balcony door cant block out. Over the last 2 weeks, there has been an increased presence of people camping, or living, or partying outside the town hall, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The noise of people talking is one thing, but there has been an electric guitar with an an amplifier, pretty much playing 24 hours at day, and if its is not the electric guitar, there are people fighting, and screaming insults and abuse - at who I dont know. To be honest, I'm reconsidering living in the area. I have no quiet enjoyment, above and beyond what would be considered normal. At times ive been standing on my balcony and all I can hear is vagrants blaring music or shouting abuse. I cant even watch TV in my lounge room anymore. I walked past the town hall today (10 Jan) to a scene of squalor, and the pungent scent of urine - and human excrement, along with cigarette butts and garbage outside on the street. I don't begrudge these people, but there is a reason they don't loiter anywhere else on chapel street with retail frontage - shop owners would call the police and it would impact commerce but for some reason - they are allow to be here. It needs to stop - support should be given to these people and the health, safety and quite enjoyment of businesses, and residents needs to be factored in.

Stonnington City Council have a lot to answer for on letting this problem get out of hand. It’s about time you take some responsibility and tidy chapel street up to what it used to be and should be. Locals should refuse to pay rates until you make the area safe ..

Please save our suburb

As the resident of rue de chapel, we have witnessed fights a couple of times, loud music, screaming at night. This has caused so much stress and tension. We are unable to sleep sometimes and this has affected our work. We feel so unsafe to go out at night. Also, every time we walked past the town hall, it smelled like alcohol or piss and it’s totally disgusting. We would like these people to be relocated.
