All the time, but especially during this most difficult pandemic, public libraries belong to the community. It is an educational as well as entertainment resource funded by that community. Surrounding area libraries have opened with appropriate restrictions and so should the Farmington Library. This is a time that it is most important that the library be available to its community.

I love and fully support my library. The library is critical to our city, especially now that students will be learning remotely - we JUST discussed this at our school staff meeting!

I was not made aware to this situation until we tried getting library books this summer. I was frustrated because we were unable to get books for our children for summer reading. All the other local libraries were up and running with curbside service. I asked my sister in law, who is a librarian in a different local library and she (as well of the rest of her staff) were well aware of the problems the board and staff have been having. We have a reputation among local librarians as a place with a toxic work environment. This is absolutely and completely unacceptable.

I have worked for another area library for years, and it makes me so sad and angry for their staff and the Farmington community that use their libraries to see this. The library board, while they may be vital, is supposed to SUPPORT the operation and success of the library and its staff. Libraries are SO essential, now more than ever, as conduits for free public knowledge, accessibility, children's programming and literacy, among many other things. Shame on them.

I have used this library since I was a child, growing up in Farmington. As a grandmother, I have brought my grandchildren to the various programs. They have been amazing. What a travesty witnessing this sabotage of a fabulous community resource.

I am deeply troubled by the behavior of Mr. Largent. We have no place for his attitude or belilgerence in our community library. He clearly needs to go. I have been a Friend of the Library for several years and use the library regularly, including the curbside service. I appreciate all they are doing during this difficult time.

As an avid library frequenter in every city in every state I've lived in on 37 years, librarians are some if the hardest working and selfless people I've ever encountered. The statement made against these librarians reflect not a need for fiscal responsibility to constituents, but a systematic dehumanizing of city workers and of people who deeply benefit from and often need all the work and services libraries provide.

This is truly despicable behavior from a library board member. He appears to have nothing but contempt for the library workers. He can not remain in a position where he can continue to retaliate against and undermine the voices of library workers.

Mr. Largent prides himself on being a businessman yet clearly is trying to run the library like a for-profit company. It isn’t. Libraries are community-centric services, funded by the tax payers to provide services. To do that they rely on library science professionals that work WITH the public they serve AND attain advanced degrees in library and information science. From his hostile letter detailing the situation with staff, he wants to cut them out of the equation and make decisions about library efficacy WITHOUT consulting library staff. This is egregious and shows he has no clue about libraries or library service. He is unfit and should be removed.

I am beyond troubled by the actions and words of Bill Largent, who has shown that he has neither the knowledge or ability to steward the library. Rather, he continues to show hostility for professional library staff who merely want to provide the services that their community has already paid for through the millage collected from property taxes. If Largent does not resign or face removal from the board, it is likely that the Farmington Community Library will continue to decline and that the damage to the community may be irreparable.
