The Elmwood District does not need any big box stores in the Elmwood Crossing project. The Common Council should be representing residents who support compliance with the Green Code, and not waivers. The PUD should not be approved in its current configuration.

It has taken years for the Elmwood Village to climb out of dreariness and become lively and attractive. Allowing a huge store to be built at the site of the old hospital would alter the character of the neighborhood and partly undo the work of the past quarter of a century. Elsewhere city planners are realizing that what makes neighborhoods attractive is their walkability and the density of their pedestrian features. We have evidence of this in the Elmwood Village as it stands. A huge store and its attendant auto traffic would make walking dangerous and unpleasant, and bringing in something that might very well drive out of business the shops that have done so much to bring foot traffic to the neighborhood threatens to make the area a cultural desert again.

There is no need to knock down any more old homes to make way for these projects. No retail is needed on residential streets either. Please abide by the Green Code. Thank you.

Elmwood Avenue provides plenty of retail space. The proposed PUD on West Utica is completely inappropriate and unnecessary.
